Jincheng entered two riders on (XR400) bikes in 2009

Rider # 209 went out on leg 3... and I don't think #210 made the finish either.

In 2010 Jincheng were back... with two JC 450 Y(amaha's)

These were (by all accounts) just re-painted/stickered Yamaha WRF 450 with the YME Rallye kit

They finished 75th and 82nd on the 2010 Dakar...

So who know's what they will turn up on in january...?

Maybe there are a couple of the new Coma andDespres 450 kit bikes on their way to LeHavre from Austria... turned out in Jincheng colours for 2011?

Coma with #1 plate for dakar 2011

Yeah... wassup with that?

Okay... so Coma won the FIM cross Country title this year... But Despres is the defending DAKAR title holder (and dakar is not part of the FIM title anyway).

Funny... (as in strange funny... not haha funny )

Coma or Despres, this year they will dominate , especially to show the 450 will be more than competitive , a couple of Aussies will do some impressive times (Smith and Strange) thats if they can get a handle on the nav skills .
And if their handgrenade Hondas hold together.
probably be the usual contenders to fill up the top ten.
Ulavesetter
Verhoeven
Castau
Progonski(is he still on the 690)?
Rodrigues etc
these guys are rock solid performers with tons of experience ,it's pretty hard for a new comer to shine with such stiff competition.
The top 10-15 will be pretty much the regular attendees.

my thoughts!

First up… where did list come from SafariBerg? Seems there are some question marks on there… but we take it as is for the purpose of the exercise...?

2011 Dakar Start odds

N° Pilote Nom Pilote Prenom Nationalite Marque Team

1 Coma Marc Espagne Ktm Ktm Mrw Rally Factory Team
2 Despres Cyril France Ktm Team Red Bull Ktm

Coma/Despres have got to be equal favorites going in, you have to say. A 50% chance that one of these two will be on top come finish time. Both (barring accident/mechanical) will play a role in the podium battle going into week two.

3 Lopez Contardo Francisco Chili Aprilia Team Giofil Aprillia
4 Rodrigues Helder Portugal Yamaha Team Yamaha Racing France Ipone

Aprilia have done their apprenticeship this last two/three years in Rallye and with some good results… with a good welder in the support truck and the ever reliable Alain Duclos on the water carrier role for dakar, Lopez could do it in 2011.

Rodrigues is; based on his results this last 18 months – in my mind the “best of the rest” at the moment so to speak… The Yamaha is proven, and eye is no doubt on the top three steps.

9 Pain Olivier France Yamaha
5 Casteu David France Sherco Casteu Elf Sherco
6 Ullevalseter PÅl Anders Norvege Ktm Team Scandinavia
7 Street Jonah Etats-unis Yamaha Jonah Street
8 Viladoms Jordi Espagne Yamaha Team Yamaha Racing France Ipone.

Is Olivier Pain on a WRF JVO kitted 450 for Dakar… or the YZF (like he rode in Marocco?)

Casteu is back with the Sherco… they were promising in 2010, he is returned now, hopefully fit (he looks much heavier than I remember him?) and with a good team organization. For sure david would like to podium for himself and the sponsors.

Pål Anders U… many years experience, a sound team support, good preparation (the bike is 450 rallye from KTM). Last year he made the podium, this year he would love to make it the highest rung, a reward for many years solid work. We shall see.

Jonah Street; with the hopes of the red white and blue on his shoulders and a new JVO kitted Yamaha… I think the always conservative but goal minded US rider will make his place known in the top ten from day one. The only downside being a one rider/privateer effort… is that all falls down to him out on the piste… but he’s done it before and if he is in the top five by rest day… he CAN be top three by the finish line.

Viladoms has the speed and experience to be top five also… it all comes down to the way the cookies crumble come Dakar time… statistics say only 50% of the top 20 runners after day one, are still around at the finish… will he be one of them?

16 Verhoeven Frans Pays-bas Bmw "bmw Motorrad By Speedbrain"
17 GonÇalves Paulo Portugal Bmw "bmw Motorrad By Speedbrain”
12 Fretigne David France Bmw "bmw Motorrad By Speedbrain"[/font]

The Speedbrain team have a good rider line up on paper – though I thought Ze Helio from Brazil was also on the roster too?

– but is it (unsure?) at the moment IF Fretigne will make the start (he is still recovering from injury… no?) in time for January.

Look to Verhoeven to post times in top ten to five regularly in week one… If the new BMW proves reliable, he could well make a top five by the finish.

10 Pedrero Garcia Juan Espagne Ktm Ktm Mrw Rally Factory Team
11 Faria Ruben Portugal Ktm Team Red Bull Ktm

As Coma and Despres water carriers… these two (assumingly) will have instruction to hover just outside position 10 to 15…? … if all goes to plan - which we know; is not always the case. And the same for Farres on Aprilia.

18 Farres Guell Gerard Espagne Aprilia Team Giofil Aprillia

13 Przygonski Kuba Pologne Ktm Orlen Team
14 Duclos Alain France Aprilia Team Giofil Aprillia
21 Czachor Jacek Pologne Ktm Orlen Team

47 Dabrowski Marek Pologne Ktm Orlen Team

These four guys are ALWAYS reliable, ALWAYS just in or outside the top 15 stage time-wise and invariably make the finish of a rally in a good result. 2011 should be no different I hope.

26 Bethys Thierry France Honda Association Enfance & Lumieres
28 Knuiman Henk Pays-bas Ktm

Thierry Bethys is FAST on a motorcycle offroad (MX, LeTouquet!). He has a couple rallies under the belt now… With luck and preparation, he is able to post some top ten stages. Knuiman is of a similar situation.

29 Pellicer Jose Manuel Espagne Yamaha

113 Smith Jacob Australie Honda Ghr Honda

The Aussie GHR Honda team make it’s debut at DAKAR in 2011… The team (like JCR in the states) has won just about all there is to win in Australia – Lead rider Jacob Smith is 2009 winner of Australasian Safari and three time podium… but the logistic/tactics of Dakar is new to them, and Jake has never navigated GPS or ridden off-piste dune stages before. He will be fast on the pure roadbook stages though.

15 Cody Quinn Alexis Etats-unis Honda Team Honda Europe

Fast in Baja… unknown at navigation? Could be a similar equation to Jake Smith from Oz… maybe a year running in the second class seats to learn the train time table, and then buy a first class ticket for 2012…? As long as the coach doesn’t get them derailed this year trying to chase the other other competitors caboose.

22 Berglund Thomas Suede Husaberg Team Scandinavia
103 Bodinger Ronnie Suede Husaberg Team Scandinavia

I’m predicting (unfortunately) a lot of spanner time for the two Swedish ‘Berg entries this year

33 Azevedo Jean Bresil Ktm Petrobras Lubrax
42 Arcarons Armenteras Jordi Espagne Honda Arcarons Rally Sport Tour
83 Picco Franco Italie Yamaha Franco Picco Racing

Three blasts from the past! The former pair ex-factory supported KTM riders in the late 90’s/early 2000’s, and Picco an ex factory Dakar rider for both Cagiva and Yamaha.

Jean de Azevedo has competed in the auto/truck division in recent years, while Arcarons retired from Dakar riding to manage the Repsol KTM rally team and Marc Coma.

Both still (likely) capable riding amongst the top 20 to 30… though Jordi is acting for 2011 as assistance rider to female competitor - Laia Sanz; so his position in the field is likely to be closely related to her placing.

Franco Picco was last years marathon category winner… A fair bet that #83 will be a fair bit higher up in the result sheets that the numberplate indicates.

51 Pavey Simon Australie Bmw

Starting his (7th?) Dakar… ex-pat Aussie Simon has become an institution amongst BMW fans, having assisted Charlie Boorman on his race to Dakar in 2006. Simon has nobody to babysit this year and I predict will aim to make his 5th Dakar finish in a fair bit better position than his 51 start number.

The “pillow fight!”

There are some gutsy girls lining up for DAKAR 2011

44 Sanz Lalia Espagne Honda Arcarons Rally Sport Tour

To be coach/assisted by Dakar legend Jordi Arcarons, “Laia” has the very best circumstances to make a good rally on her HONDA CRF450 X.

100 Meier Christina Allemagne Sherco Crocoaventures

Tina Meier… former womens DAKAR champ and many rallies under her belt, is with one of the best teams – SHERCO – and I’m sure has her eye set on winning the female category once again.

56 Seel Annie Suede Ktm Meca System-Sweden Challenge

Annie (last years lady trophy winner) is on Dakar number five for her, and a tried and proven 450 EXC with assistance from Meca System.

58 Pol Mirjam Gesina Maria Pays-bas Honda Team Honda Europe

Last years protagonist for the womens trophy – Mirjam – will be on a Honda Europe entry.

173 Morgan Jenifer Royaume-uni Yamaha

ADVRider's very own J-Mo and piglet will be making her first appearance in the “big show”. We are all familiar with her preparations to her JVO kitted WRF 450 for this DAKAR, and with the support of the Desert Rose team – on top of her previous experience at the Heroes Legend 2009 and Tunisia Rallye 2010… we no doubt wish Jenny a very solid performance in Argentina in January.

That’s about it for me…

Ze is in with BMW Speedbrain team for 2011 Dakar 100% for sure, dont know 100% about Fretigne but I'm pretty sure he is sitting it out, hence Ze's ride.

Ze will be running top 10 for sure..............in 2009 he ran top 10 on a stock domestic Brazil Honda, on some stages he was top 450, finished 12th outright and 3rd 450 at the end after a couple of issues on day 12. He blitzed all the 2010 Safari boys on the last Esperence dune Dakar like stage

Fretigne is out. Ze is in.

Knuiman doesnt have a sponsor yet.... So he wont be riding I guess.

Thomas Du Bois will not be on a Husaberg but on a Honda.

Evert Kroon will never again be on a Honda, so he's on the Husaberg (or a last minute KTM)

Teus Visser is their flying mechanic Expect him for some top 20 finishes when Thomas and Evert let him loose
