My biggest problem would be that every time I get to Key West (been goin' there for 32 years now) I don't want to leave the place.

I'm tuning in for this one for sure. And as for the Droid, it's got a 5mp camera so maybe traveling light will work out!

Ride safe!

Joeybones, I have 4 or 5 Jimmy Buffet albums cued up and an XM tuned for Margaritaville. I'm working this week, but come midnight on Saturday my clocks are getting set to island time...

Obligatory cockpit shot
21

And like Ewan McGregor I start the trip with visit to the folks' house
22

Unlike Ewan though, this is the camera for my crew of one
23

Everyone together now! Subvocalize "Droid" (nice reflect )

We meandered through south Florida all day. Much of it like this:
24

No interstates! Few cars. Some rain and LOTS OF HEAT. Oduibhir said we hit 102 at some point.

We saw this along the way

More impressive in person. That bucket is the size of a pickup truck!

Sloshing our way down US29 we roll through thousands of dragonflies. The majority were at around 10 feet AGL like an insect reenactment of Midway. A picture couldn't do it justice. I cut a path through this kamikaze chaos like some casting call for Men In Black gone bad. Oduibhir was dodging the deflected carcasses in my wake.

We finally pour out of our gear at the Tamiami

After a hydration attempt we get rolling again and pass beside some impressive atmospheric pyrotechnics. For a while we headed into a black hole of rain which fortunately only lightly doused us. The temp gauge rapidly plunged from 98 to 73 and as the rivulets passed through my mesh jacket into my pants I attempted to angle my legs to keep my waterproof boots from becoming cisterns. As all riders must, we had a choice: get wet from rain or wrap up in plastic and get wet from sweat. We made the right call- rain.

Out the other side of the weather front we stop to wring out next to an airboat vendor. Popular attraction 'round here.

if colloquially snoring = sawing logs,

then Oduibhir's slumber rumble = the KT event!!!

We are talking dinosaur killing, global devastating, WMD.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!! !

.....so we roll down US1
with massive distances of construction zones. Fortunately we are headed south because north bound is bumper to bumper, at least intially. The majority of the road seems to be 45MPH. There is some 35 and 55.

We make a gas stop 20 miles north of Key West and attempt to cool down with an iced beverage while watching the poor kid on duty trying to fend off the locals who insist on buying gas after he has locked the pumps. Mmmm, tastey and entertainment.

Rolling on we take the first Naval Air Station turn only to find that their campgrounds are further down. No worries we can find it....an hour later.....after we end up here:
29

It's 2300hours and the streets, while not packed are still humming with activity. At the southern marker we ask some other tourists if they will snap a pic for us. While the Droid takes okay daylight photos, night shots are not great.

Fortunately, Oduibhir has a better shot.
30

Still looking for the camp grounds we start at the begining.

31

32

Finally, at midnight we pitch camp. (Pics are from the next dawn.)
33

34

We tried to find the "tent" area, but decided we were done. Stick a fork in us. We claim this land...

There are cool murals everywhere. This is Marathon Key.

I noticed that because of the long day I've not been able to put down all of those stray, but interesting thoughts that come and go on the road. A voice memo would be really useful here. So until the brain reengages I'm going to be in Joe Friday mode- just the facts...

One of the interesting aspects of these ride reports is the stories of the people you meet. Point and case, while at McD's talked with Don Mull.
37

Don is flying to Beijing this week to pick up a million feet of oil boom. When I say flying, I mean this charter boat captain from the keys will be in the co pilot's seat. He's been working since day 14 of the BP crisis to get this stuff in place to protect our keys.

Go Don, go!
