South Florida is S W E L T E R I N G !

Take a wet towel. Put in the dryer on hi for 10 minutes then climb into the dryer with it. We are both using camel backs but they're not enough. We have to stop and supplement, ususally with Gatorade but frequently with a little publicized gem- the slushy.

This has been a key piece of kit too:

Also key for recovery in south florida- churros. Yum.

Oduibhir started his day 1 with busted fuel line, followed by a hi wind tip over that broke his left mirror. Yesterday both of his helmet speakers failed. (Sidebar- Neither of us is very happy with Starcom and are likely migrating to Airrider.)

Today I had a buckle failed that put the cargo strap vicinity my chain. Luckily the guy behind us got my attention at a light.

I've deciphered the main issues and the common denominator is we lack gremlin defense. Russ never had one and mine is now AWOL. Bells must be found!

Heading into yet another storm bank. This one pounded us hard for about 5 miles.

Same spot on the ground just looking left of our direction of travel
We are right at the weather boundary here.

So the first leg is done. We made it down to the keys and back for the shake down. Oduibhir is in the garage wiring in a Starcom headset. Thanks to Tuse who lent his to the cause. We'll see if it works.

I've been showing solidarity and haven't run my XM or MP3.

For those also watching our Spot tracks, you will note a big gap between the tracks today compared to yesterday.

We got a late start so I lopped of all the "good" route east of us and went straight up the slab at FTB (full tlit boogy).

...and Oduibhir wants me to point out that while yes he snores, my REM may have been impacted by the extra strength 5 hour energy drink I took 2 hours before camping.

...nah, it was the snoring.

My F800GS is a great bike. Flaws? A few. I'm in a support group.

One item that bugs me is the side stand. The bike leans too far over. When loaded I've had it tip left nearly going over.

Penny tech solution, wedge some metal between the side stand and the frame stop.

I would prefer an OEM solution. But this will keep it upright. [Edit: in the end, the stand turned out to be bent. I replaced the mount and the stand months later.]

Not yet. But I'm keeping an eye open for a bike shop.

So day one my dad asks where the "Alaska or bust" sign was.

So here's your sign, Dad, courtesy of Ace hardware:
