School Supply Ride 2008:

Here's a report from the 2008 School Supply Ride!

It's 8:00 am and the riders are starting to gather for today's ride.

Bill's V Strom, Andy's Connie and Jay Dee's 9fifty.

Thanks to my buddy Bert, All made it in early and ready to ride.

The JayDee triing to figure out how to make his 950 look like the SE edition.

Even my generic Strom get's a little love from the fans.

Sign up went smooth....Speaking of smooth. Here's Rob giving an adoring fan an autograph.

As at all DDS events..it's all about the route sheet preparation.
Hey are you using those scissors?

We're only half way through with sign up and here's the take so far.

Looks like Mrs Swampy got the green bike running again....Thanks again must go out to the duck.

As Swampy said there were all types and sizes of bikes at today's ride.
Here's the BMW corner. Did I ever post that funny BMW video? Oh yeah, I didn't think it would go over very well with the German audience.

Now here's some bikes you don't see at to many DDS events.

I believe that was a 91 BMW GS, a 2007 GS1200, a Honda ST1300, and a Sweet GB500 Honda.

Better pictures of the BMW

And the Honda too

A Duc even showed up.

And Here's Robs new toy

Here's my favorite from today. Not exotic, but verrrrrrry nice!

I'm guessing 1972 Honda CL350.

We were even graced with a V Max showing

Well hello there pilgram. Even the Duke showed up at this event.

Stay Tuned For More....

Let's check in the back of Swampy's truck to see how we're doing. Awesome job people!

There were the last minute BS sessions before we head off.

I overhead this conversation.

Red Shirt:
What kinda gas mileage ya think this thing gets?

Grey shirt:
And I wonder how long those tires last?

White shirt:
Never mind about gas and tires...That things must be a chick magnet.

All three men:

We want one.

Samantha tells everyone she knows a short cut back to the ranch so she can get to the ribs first.

...and finally...

Everyone together! We made an impact on some kids lives that day!

DDS Armadillo Dual Sport 2010

Let's start with the pre-ride/layout....

Two weeks to verify the route and the route sheet... get things done and WHAM! (literally!) a plane crashed and some changes neded to be made!

But we survived the challenge (as did the pilot of the Marine Corps jet!)

A summertime Florida morning... I love it when the dew point hovers around 70 degrees and the fog starts to rise from the ground....

Bert gettin his pre-ride on.... later in the day... Bert will be doing all kinds of gymnastics trying to get the last drop of fuel in that stock tank to move into the carb.... and he still ran short at the entrance to the gas station...

Pre Ride Day 2.... here comes the crew to the first water hole n the first section...these dried up by game day! (And the sand dried out in this section as well!)

Now we were wandering down the road when this Yamaha WR250 just pops up out of the water hole! You can notice on my bike to the Right that the water wasn't even axle deep... but look how far back it goes! Yes, we're riding in the ONF!

Here's Megan going under the Arch...

and another trail pic....

Okay pre-ride's over let's move on to some more...

Armadillo Part 2/43

In summertime I double bag the Camel Bak! Freeze 'em up to two big ice cubes and nice cold water all morning!

anyway..... some shots from around the stage...

Rufians and Scaliwags...

Intros and new friendships....

Bling discoveries...

New folks joining in.... (from Pinellas County) Jen, in green and white, on only here second event made it farther through the sand than some others. She's determined, no doubt about it!

Stars of the new DDS Video: Crusty Codgers of Dirt...

Some sneaky Russians....

Megan, one of 3 female riders today...

31 people were at the staging area located at the SafeRide Motorcycle School in Eustis. Check them out here!

Got a few more pics coming from the trail...

Armadillo 2010 3/3

Twisty curvy scenic pavement on the way to the woods....

The whole ride is this easy.... NOT!!!

The 'Dillo is by design a tough and long endurance dual sport ride. It's summertime in Florida (hot hot!), it's in the Ocala NF (sand, sand and deeper sand), and it's 200 miles long (hot and sandy!)

Funny how folks ask about the paved road to trail ratio.... well it just doesn't really matter....

Considering it was 22 miles to the first woods section (that was only 3 miles long) and half the riders decided to call it a a day after that section.... this section is designed to test a riders ability... because it only gets worse after that!

Here's Rich, part of the sweepers.... had a stuck float and an electrical short. We got that squared away and kept going....

Here's some shots from the second woods section....

Yes, this is the ONF....

Crazy Russian! Yes DDS has now entered eastern Europe! We have riders in North and South America, Asia, and now the former Soviet Union!

So we (Sweepers) were an hour behind everyone and caught up to riders in this section....

...and a few more bailed from here...

This was part one of the Shake-N-Bake Combo.... first we dipped you in some egg wash now to roll ya'll in the crispy coating and fry it all up!

From the water the brave ones crossed the paved road and went into the sandy section...hehehe... no pics here, but it was only a mile long and the sand wasn't THAT deep only 5 or 6 inches.... checkout MrGuns pics... see for yourself....

Okay.... now here's a pic of everyone resting in the middle of the NEXT sandy section... this crew decided to bail here... not even half way to lunch... so we're talking about the 35 mile marker... so let's see... that's about 22 miles of pavement and 12 miles of sand... err... I mean woods roads.... Yup easy ride. Over half the riders called it a day....

Props here to Jen... part of the group we were waiting for in the pic above. On only her second organized ride she made it to this point. AWESOME!

They're all not this bad.... just the 'Dillo!

Now some more trail pics...

Out along Hopkins Praries...

The Duck Neck Tree on FR25...

Sand..... What Sand?.... There was sand?

I show Bert a sign that I know has been there at least 10 years....

Yes.... Ocala NF..... ya just have to go look!

...and once everyone came in and the parking lot was empty.... I was lucky enough to ride the 690 another 100 miles back home....

The the sky opened up in Springhill and I took some coverage under and overpass....

Made it home a tad bit past 8pm....

Just another great day of riding in Florida!

Join In!

I've noticed there is a lot of traffic and views to this thread. Thanks!

What I would like to do is you folks become a bit more friendly!

So I'm gonna ask ya'll to chime in with where you live and what you ride. Just a general "Howdy!"

Be nice to see who's enjoying the thread!

------------------------------------------------------------------

I'll start it off...

Hi, I'm Swampy.

I'm on the Suncoast and ride a variety of motorcycles. I've been riding for over 37 years on all terrains. I'm a former enduro and hare scrambles racer and like a more challenging off-road oriented ride, but I can throttle back and enjoy the sights of a trip. I consider myself an all-around motorcycle guy from riding to racing, and to the history of the sport.

I'm blessed to have a wonderful career as an RN and am currently working with our health systems IT department training hospital staff on how to use the electronic medical record.

I have a great bunch of friends and my extended DDS family is made up of some of the best people I've ever met. And I'm proud to know them.

...and thanks for reading my thread!

Ken here...I've been following the thread from the beginning since I am a Florida native and all, been here all but 2 years of my life- spent those in the Catskills.
I am currently living in North Florida right between a very nice dirt track and slab track, (best of both worlds!) yes I ride both but I have been spending more time on the slab of recent.
I have owned all kinds of bikes and I currently ride a Buell Ulysses every day. I also have several dirt rides that I squirt around on my property and the track with and my kids also ride with me. I am blessed with some very wonderful kids and a great wife that has put up with motorcycles, and I mean alot of them over the past 15 years we have been married.
Sold my DS ride months back so I have to trailer my KLX or one of my XR's to do any serious off road riding.

2010 Forest Clean-Up!

Saturday August 14

The 10th Annual Forest Clean-Up!

DDS is proud to be part of the Richloam Sportsman's Association! While we may not be about hunting or fishing, we share the forest with these people and it's our responsibility to all be stewards of the lands which we use.

This year more than 200 people showed up to haul trash out of the forest. Old mattresses and paint cans. Bottles and cans. Chairs and tv's.

BIG DDS Kudos go out to all who came out!

Tom Huse was the winner of the 2011 Devil's Creek entry and membership!

Let's get ya'll some pictures of the action:

Sign in, get your trash and recycle bags, 50/50 raffle tix, and door prize tickets!

One of the door prizes...

One fun thing about the clean up is that you get to drive around in the forest...

... here Mrs Swampy took a picture while I was trying to walk on a log... in the hopes I'd fall in the water! Love that girl!

The official survey results: Forest polluters prefer natural Lite 2 to 1 over Bud Light!

Mrs snapped this pic of some fat boy picking up a "floater" with the hopes he's topple over and fall in the water.... do i sense a pattern in the Mrs' reason for taking pictures?

THERE! Clean and shiney!

...and now with this remnant from a polluter of the woods:....

"If you want to try to get your forest to stay dry and smell clean, here's what one polluter did: Throw away some Old Spice deoderant!"

That's one handsome spokesman right there for the clean-up and I don't care what ya say!

Now back at the BBQ.... people start coming in from collecting....

... waiting on some awesome BBQ chicken and pork, beans, slaw, desserts, drinks, door prizes.....

An action shot of the trash drop off!

John Hardiman's buddy came up with this 5-ton truck. They gathered all the kids and took them for a photo-op ride! You KNOW hunting kids LOVE big trucks!

Johnny Afrika talking with Mrs Swampy...

Tom (citationdoc) and his son Isaiah... Geohound to the R

Isaiah rockin' the ride!

Great time, good cause, great food, AND we showed the hunters that once again that we're in this together!

DixieDualSport Riders ROCK!

Hey Swampy!

OG Florida native here checking in from Ca. Been checking in on this thread from time to time living vicariously through your reports and great photos.
Grew up in Fl. came out here in 1990, been trying to get back "HOME" the last 8-10 years. just cant seem to make it happen. I still make it back for the occasional Bike Week or FTR race. I just borrow a friends bike and fly in.
Well keep up the good work.

Lendon Smith

PS I have a buddy in the Dixie Dual Sport club. Randy Faul, ring a bell?

Cool, grew up in the same town with Randy, was my mentor, so to speak!
I raced FTR from 81 up until I moved out here. Maybe we have shared a camp fire before!
