Memorial Day Weekend on the Kenai Peninsula
Left Anchorage around noon I guess. Wasn't really paying attention to the time of day. None of us were. All three of us were raring to go.
A friend of a friend let us use their cabin in Cooper Landing. I was absolutely beautiful. All the amenities. Right on the Kenai River. The forecast for this part of Alaska had been calling for rain. We tried to find some but didn't really have much luck. No, ours was to be a hot and dusty journey. Maybe the occasional overcast with the slightest hint of sprinkles. Day 1, Skilak Lake Road: John playing on a hill ![]() ![]() Me playing on a hill ![]() On the Road ![]() ![]() Stops along the way ![]() ![]() Then, we turned around and rode back down Skilak Lake Road back to Cooper Landing for dinner, some campfire goodness and a good night's sleep. Day 2, Skilak Lake Road and Swanson River Road: We could have gotten to Swanson River Road via the Sterling Highway but, what fun would pavement be? So, we hit Skilak Lake Road again. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Swanson River Road: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Things were shaping up to be an awesome afternoon. 80°F cloudless weather. And then, this happened: ![]() We almost decided to just burn it! ![]() ![]() Yup. Flat tire. John pulled it and strapped it to his KLR and headed out towards Soldotna. I hung out and kept Joe company. John was able to get the tube patched at Johnson's Tire Service. ![]() About an hour later we were back on the road. And no, we didn't torch Joe's KLR. We got back to the cabin at Cooper Landing and were no worse for the wear. The next day we headed back to Anchorage. Again with awesome sunny, warm weather. Overall, couldn't have had a more perfect extended weekend.

It's good to see people enjoy shooting signs where ever you go.
The pictures make me miss the 10 years I spent in Alaska, but the snow on the mountains brings me back to reality.
