Happy as a Pig in Mud.
Stinging in one eye. Ride and ride with the eye closed, blinking, closed, blinking. Miles and miles and it works out. Sort of. When the stinging starts feeling like fire I stop. Black bug in my mirror, black bug in my eye.
Sheww... greezy with bugs, greezy. Bend back the steel toe, back and forth, finally breaks. That wack on my boot tore off half of the steel toe. Staples...next time screws in my toes. The chain is worn and lube only makes it quiet less than a gas stop, hell 50 miles. Plan for new chain and a wash for the bugs. Heave on the center stand, that pinch in the back. Next time push harder with the boot ... pack less, I have packed less. All my camping and clothes in a single orange, 30 liter Seal Line bag. The kit is ready, the sprockets and chain are not. Gas up the Pig. Gas is still cheap. This is an old weak pump in a country station, it doesn't shoot gas out of that 990 tank, spilling everywhere. I've drowned a number of motors in the past, but spill nothing today. Gas won't drip on this motor anyway, plastic bodywork covering everything. Can't even see that sweet motor.

Drive home on a Friday, pull on old jeans, old redwings and an old open face helmet. Fire up the Pig and watch the bars rise.
Slip out of the neighborhood. Pull in the clutch, drift down the hill. Even in this old helmet the chain is silent. New rear, well new to me Scorp is next. Gift from an old friend. It'll get me across Kansas to a new tire in Colorado. The girl on the phone at Apex in Colorado Springs assures me that they will have the Mefo in stock. Got 'em on sale. A tire in that town is good, it's where things start to get interesting. More traction is better. I won't have to haul one acoss country and it's right on the way. Camp in the rocky hills above the Springs and pick it up the first full day in Colorado. Colorado. Tomorrow I'll ride the chain tool back to Mike across town. Pretend to be on the road.

I love the time before a trip starts. Maps on the wall and maps on the computer screen. Checking bolts and tightening screws, things to do until leaving. It's a preoccupation and tension builds towards the departure date.
My kickstand is too long now that I have relocated it. Too long when the bike is loaded anyway. I need to find someone with a welder and a band saw, cut off an inch and a bigger foot welded on. I need to get on that, I leave in two weeks. Man that new chain felt good last evening, all that racket and vibration gone. Smooth on the long ride out will be good. I find myself thinking about Kansas and those long empty roads, so different from here. Smooth sailing on that great sea of the plains. How in the heck did they do it? Indians on foot and on horse. Settlers winding their way across. No land marks for miles. It takes me two and half days to get to the Rockies and then it's play time. It took months for them and then the real work started.

http://www.cjdesignsllc.com/LC8parts.html Built after our Canada bike trip. I've put many miles on this and it's working great, the larger foot I welded to the bottom is a huge plus when parking in the dirt. A little turn of the foot up or down and you can get your perfect lean angle. Send me your stand I will add this mod and send it back. Allows for 1" of travel adjustment. $85 plus shipping.

Thanks but I already had it cut, welded, painted and put on. Muffler shop on Midlo did it. Perfect length. Yes, you should be on this trip but Germany with family is great too. I wish my Grandmothers were alive. I'm chomping at the bit to go now.

I followed along perfectly. Looking forward to the ride report.
The guy who bought my lowered shocks has the side stand for sale. Might be of some use. http://advrider.com/forums/showthrea...ight=sidestand
