on the trail maintenance?

Did you do much maintenance on the ride with the 530? Oil change, filter change, etc? or did you run the entire 1500 miles without doing a thing?

I changed oil on the engine side once at the half way point, I run Mobile 1 15-50W for high performance engines. Since the 530 holds so little oil carrying one quart will give you enough to top off with and to do a complete change once. I carried one extra pre-oiled air filter and a bunch of pre-oiled filter skins. I find that if you run the filter skins and change them often that the filter stays really clean. (its a lot easier to pack skins than filters).

I've got 120 hrs on the 530 now and it's still running like new.

WOW excellent RR. I dont know how I missed tbhis one earlier. I have a similar ride planned for in this year in April or May. I am riding from my garage through Death Valley into NV and then into Reno. Would you mind sharing the track you have?

I ride an '09 530 once I got the rings replaced under warrenty the bike has been rock solid. I am going to look into the filter skins great idea. Thanks for taking us all along!

I sent you a PM about the tracks. The filter skins work great for long trips, helps keep your pack down in size. Post up pictures of your trip when you get back

Have too much time on my hands and just finished reading a ride report: 2000 miles of ID, NV, ID, WY. Made me think of last summers trip so I went through it again. Hope this knee heals quick, I am needed some two wheeled excitement.

Looks like there was still snow in June? Not too much from the look of the pictures, though. Nice route -- some single track too!

Yeah the high desert can be a little unpredictable that time of year, it's best to go prepared for any type of weather condition. The single track was great! I can't wait to get down that way again next summer.

2nd time reading this one, nice job. I would be interested in your gps route if you have it. I'm planning a trip that way in OCT. How would the weather be then?

Hodakaguy,

Great RR, the vid's put it in such a different perspective...from the highlands down to the desert floor...absolutely awesome!!

Just out of curiosity, how far were you able to go on a tank of gas with the 6.3 gallon tanks that you guys had and approx how far was it between fuel stops? Did you notice a big difference in weight on the front and handling characteristics with such a big tank?

I also had a BRP (which imploded on me) and then bought my '09 530EXC (which I believe is one of the best bikes that I've ever had) and am getting ready to do a trip next week to ride 400 miles of the Colorado 500 route, which I can't wait to do (first time riding up at altitude and in CO)!!! RR to follow. Did you also have a WRR at one point, thought that I may have also seen you on the WRR forum also, back when I had mine prior to the BRP.......

Some beautiful and inspiring pictures in this thread. Reminds me of when I drove from Tahoe to Las Vegas......I didn't know a landscape like that still existed in America. It was refreshing and uplifting.

We averaged around 50mpg and the tanks actually hold about 5.5gal...giving us a pretty good range. Fuel stops didn't end up being a problem as all the places we stopped at had fuel available, if a station had been out of fuel it may have been a different story. I have a different spring for the rear and I adjust the front pre-load to get the suspension tuned back in with all the extra weight. The bike feels a little heavy with the large tank and all the gear but you quickly get used to it and think nothing of it.

My buddy had a WRR and I helped him set up that forum so I was on it for a while.

Have a great time on your trip!, and post up a link to the RR
