F8 Fan Prob.

A fellow on the F800 site has just pointed this out to me. He found out with the help of his GS911, that his fan was frozen. (The GS911 has a fan test.) I plugged mine in to find the same thing. He was able to free his up only to find a little while later it was frozen again. With the help of a little WD40, I was able get mine to spin up only to fail a second fan test. A little more persuasion and it was spinning again. But I can hear the fan clicking or buzzing as if something is caught in it. It looks clear and I think it may be internal. As in bearings. We both live in the Pac. NW so the fan doesn't get a lot of use. But, it would be nice to be there when we need it. It's a bit of a job to pull it all apart so I hope I do not have to go this route. I think there are probably a lot of F800GS riders out there that will find they have the same problem (anybody who goes off road, basically) and don't know it. I sure don't think a lot of dealers know about it. Mine, for one.

Hmmn. Mine works fine and gets frequent use. Maybe that's the problem, yours has frozen up from lack of use?

I remeber reading about a guy whose bike overheated. He came to find a bird had wedged between his radiator and fan. Yuck.

The infrequent use is definately part of the problem. Running the test again revealed the source of the sound sounds more like plastic (IE; fan blade) hitting something like some dirt or a rock. Too bad it's such a major effort just to clean it out!

My brother had this issue. They replaced the fan on warranty. One of the blades in the fan had cracked, I think.

The fan is too open to dust and gravel and stuff.

If you get this problem BMW are pretty picky about turning the bike into the shop whether they have time to work on it or not. Afraid you will overheat the engine
