Best 990 mod, and it's FREE!
I have been a wheelie problem with my new 990. The Bike Just would not pull a 2nd gear wheelie! i have 16t cs but every time i tried it it felt like the bike was shutting down on me. Well after a lot of searching i found this mod!!
http://www.superduke.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=72 It takes 20 min and what a difference!! That 20% extra power in 2nd and 3dr is huge! i am sure this is old news but i was so excited i had to tell somebody!

Euro only
I am pretty sure it is a Euro thing only. Noise regulations stuff.
But I could be wrong, it happens all the time

I was thinking about this thread tonight on my ride, and i had a whole bunch of smart as remarks.. like.....
Hey thats good to hear, ya know those 990s don't have much throttle response... Ya know i was having a hard time getting the back tire to break loose in the dirt... There was way more better ones but... What i really will say is cool.. Now if it gave me more pull in 5th and 6th... I am sure you know how your bike pulls, so it must have made a diference. I'll give it a whirl, sounds like an easy enough mod for me...

I was wondering why people have so much trouble doing wheelies.
My bike has the Acro mapping and never affected me. The other benefit of Acro mapping is that it uses fuel faster and lightens the front end to pop it up even more easily. |

This mod is very well known amongst ktm owners here in europe (first thing I did when I got mine). However, I suspect that it is useless in the US, because the noise regulations are less strict over there.
Also, this mod is useless when you run the sport mapping, for that eliminates the restrictions in 2nd and 3d gear. Since it worked for you, it might very well be that ktm does not change the mappings for US bikes after all. Don't know... |

Here is a link to the pics and write up that I did when I owned a SD. Simple mod but NOT a 20% gain in power. Its only for 2nd and 3rd gear and you really won't notice a thing, but every little bit adds up.

Well i can tell you that the bike pulls a lot harder in 2nd and 3rd now
![]() and it will pull a 2nd gear wheelie easy. There are (2) 3 wire connectors on lower left side one white one black. You want the black connector. I checked the wires with an ome meter and they go to ground when in 2nd and 3rd. The 3rd wire (light green is for the neutral light) All i did was cut the 2 wires and tape them back.

If you're not comfortable cutting the wires, you can also push the contacts out of the connector, bend them back and secure with some tape or shrin kwrap.

I did this mod on my 950SM last year prior to changing the exhausts. From what I have read here and on other forums, it is the EPC, electronic power control, and I think a Euro thing only, (don't quote me on that last bit though).
On a 950 it works only at full throttle in 2nd & 3rd gear by bleeding a little air into the carb so that the vacuum is reduced thereby preventing the slide opening fully. On the 990 I believe it it has the same effect but achieves it more electronically. I remember reading on HOW or somewhere that you need to put a resistor in the loop on the 990 to prevent the FI light staying on also. On a recent trip through Spain & Portugal, I was wringing the neck out of my 950 in the mountain twisties mainly in 2nd & 3rd and there was certainly no problem with power...
