I already shortened the driveshaft and as of now the only other re engeneering that I can see are,,,,,,,,,,

1 The exaust will need to be re routed so the transmission cooler line will fit.The existing exaust is cobbed anyway so a little more cobbing won't be a big deal.

2 the 643 cooler lines are almost twice the size of the 542 units and the 542 was plumed so only half the fluid went to the cooler.
Some plumbing will be needed.

Oh yeah,,,,,,the place I got the parts from is a junkies paradise,,, and one of the old buses he has is equiped with a 8.3 643 combo that I can test drive if I get the hankerin for some more cubic inches,,,and the price is right.

Stay tuned!

Not quite unless you mean some progress as rolling again.

I still have to see if the kickdown cable and the shift cable will adapt.

Among many other things I'm sure.

yes....that . I was wondering how it was getting along. I don't subscribe much but this one is on my radar. With my large team (circus) it is only a matter of time until I need a big top hauler myself.

I've been making progress on the body as well , most of the welding is done just have to button up the floor and the body panels can start going back on as well.

The crank adapter on the left was the fly in the ointment that was holding me back.

It's only application is a 5.9/643 combo which is rare.
I could've purchased one from Cummins,,,,,,,,,,,for $260+ tax.
Fuck that!

Under power once again.

The Ghetto Bus once again moves under it's own power.

I went for a little road test Friday afternoon to shake down the new tranny and all went well.
The transmission works as advertised and completely transforms the way this thing drives.
What used to be converter slippage is now forward motion.
This unit was behind a Cat 3116 or 3126 but as the rpm characteristics are similar to a 5.9 Cummins the shift points work well.

Another thing that became apparent was the power the engine makes, the data plate says 160, no way!
From past experience I'm guessing 220-230 and most of it was going to waste being transfered through the 542.
I can't wait to get it back together so I can drive it for real and see what she'll do.
Here's a few pics.
