Not sure if this is the right place to put this but it say's Tughill/Adirondacks so seemed to fit.

Looking for input on route from Watertown to Lake Placid area.

A buddy and I are riding from Watertown to lake Placid area in June-ish.

We've done the trip for 3 years now but this year we bought dual sport-ish bikes.

Me on a Weestrom and him on a Sertao.

Thinking about this route http://goo.gl/maps/YzNhX ...main concern is I read that the Moose River/Cedar River Road 's do not allow motorcycles on them (which sounds ridiculous).

How strongly is this enforced? Do they actually give tickets? Do they make you turn around and exit the way you came in?

Other then that how's this route look?

cliff notes ...route is basically Watertown down rte 126 across Number 4 road and Stillwater road towards Inlet then Limkiln road/otter brook road/Moose river Road, Cedar River Road coming out at Indian lake and then heading north to Lake Placid.

Infos on Moose River road from Inlet to Indian lake please.

Route 12 to port Lyden, to moose river road, 28 North to 30 to placid. 3 and 11 are the most boring. Take a look. There are probably better ways.

I live on Number Four Road in Petries Corners, a few miles from the "Blue Line" and Stillwater Road.

Moose River Plains is indeed "closed to motorcycles"...but that doesn't mean you can't go through there. I have...others have. I have also been apologetically stopped by the Forest Service and I volunteered to turn around cause the guy was so cool and agreed it was a stupid rule...but.

The rule is a holdover from the seventies when outlaw biker gangs used to meet in there and raise hell. Now the law is mired in political infighting over who controls what...and nothing gets done.

It was mid-summer when I got stopped, and it was late fall when I cruised on through without a glance. Mid-summer is Tourist Season up here, so...in June you might get turned around. But ride slow, be polite and you might be fine. Nobody's going to jail over this.

If I can offer route suggestions?

Stay on Rt. 3 North out of Carthage, turn Right on either Thorpe Street or Hospital drive (follow the blue H signs to take you past Carthage Area Hospital). You want to wind up on W. Street Road.
Turn Right on Rogers Crossing Rd.
Turn Right on Texas Rd. This road is used as a stage in the Black River Stages Rally race. Dirt...Fun!
T at 812, turn right. You'll be in Indian River.
Turn Left at Erie Canal Road.
T on Old State Road, turn Left. You're in Belfort, which is not much but pretty.
Turn Right on Belfort Rd.
Turn Left on Effley Falls Road.
T at Soft Maple Road, turn Left.
T at Buck Point Rd., Turn Right.

You will then intersect with your planned route at Stillwater Road. It will add a little time but it's a helluva lot more interesting and fun. This is my stomping grounds and if you had time I could show you lots of interconnecting trails.

Any questions hit me up!

Wow thanks for all the details Chuckracer.

I hope your beer is cold and wet cause we're staying at your place now lol.

I think we'll probably take our chances and ride the moose plains route regardless ...it just looks to awesome to pass by.

And hey ...a ticket or having to turn around is easier to deal with then getting kicked off Seneca Nation territory by guys with guns in the Allegheny like last year...but that's a whole nuther story.

Yeah, that'd put a halt to the proceedings.

Barring that, head North on 28 to Blue Mountain Lake, 28/30 to Long Lake and continue up 30 to Tupper Lake, then Saranac, Placid and Wilmington.

Rich probably knows some good routes up there.

Hey Chuck

Casper137, here's your same route with a little more paved twisties and gravel thrown in on the eastern side. It makes for a longer day, but also easily added or subtracted from your current routing. http://goo.gl/maps/GY6YP

So THAT'S what I was doing shoveling my roof and trying not to have a heart attack! Couple more days like that and I'll be able to dead-lift this 950!

I've been trying to get the No Motorcycles regulation changed, and as others have pointed out, it's frustrating. The Forest Rangers on either end are both riders, and understand the frustration. I'll keep trying various connections in an effort to get it changed, especially since it is a DEC regulation, and the road is technically a State Road for registered motor vehicles. I'd really like to camp there, and I know I won't get harassed, but I'd like to see it opened up for everyone.
