Adventure This: Three Days in the Oregon Backcountry!

Ten motorcycles and a two man chase crew descend on the tiny hamlet of Prineville for a three day, 450 mile off road adventure. Plan is to meander in a big loop and ride parts of the Millican and East Fort Rock trail system, see geological features like Hole in the Ground, Fort Rock, Crack in the Ground and the Paisley Caves, and find out who’s man enough to down a 30 oz steak and all the trimmings. Good times, new friends, adventure and some of the best off-road riding in the world!

It’s Thursday night and we all meet for dinner and drinks.

An international affair, visiting from the great white north is the Canadian team Joe on the left and Pat in the middle. The lone Yankee is Red on the right from Carlsborg, WA on the Olympic Peninsula.

Here’s Team Roper (not the rodeo kind), a son-in-law, father, and son team. Aaron on the left flew in from Denver. Mick in the middle from Vancouver, B.C. (by way of Nevada) and his son Chris from Reno.

Chase truck extraordinaire Mark from Vancouver WA on the left and wild-man-undercover Mark from Portland on the right.

Dave from Portland.

Kyler, chase truck guy from Portland.

Dave, sweep rider from Prineville, on the right visiting with Red.

And me, from Prineville, in a file photo from Baja.

Hang on! More to follow…

Saddle up!

I see Dillon's still the send off... That looks like a rough and tumble bunch... they could've handled the shoe and a little Mo..

Was she supposed to be on the trip too? I would imagine that she would have to be the rabbit cause if she was the sweeper we'd all be going slow!

Don't you mean backwards?

Saving her for next time you visit!

DAY 1 – Prineville to Christmas Valley

DAY 1 – Prineville to Christmas Valley.

7 am we meet at the staging area with the goal of kickstands up at 8 am. Some of the guys are there and ready at 7:01. Some (not naming names Mark and Dave) decided to take the scenic route to the staging area by way of Redmond.

Here’s not-naming-names Dave.

And Mark warming up the 450X.

Joe and Pat from the great white north. Joe “Canadian Club” was the only one to earn a nickname on the trip which is unusual. Not exactly sure how he earned it but perhaps some of the other riders will chime in and provide that info.

Getting ready…

Lining up the bikes for a group pic.

The team:

As you can see the soil is perrrrrrfect. It had rained HARD the last couple days and I was watching the forecast on an hourly basis. The rain did not let up until this morning as we drove to the staging area. But the weather broke and was warming up nicely. Couldn’t have asked for a better combination: nice tacky soil (no dust), clear skies and cool air.

We have a little group huddle, ask for a blessing on the trip and we are off!

Kickstands were up just after 8. At 8:30 we are 7 miles down the trail.

More to follow…MUCH more!

Super great morning. Crisp clean air. No dust. Great riding group! Perfect conditions!

Up on top of a little power line hill. Waiting to catch some action shots.

Pat from the GWN.

Wild Man Mark.

Dave getting a tad frisky.

Good air shot of “Airon” with bro in law Chris right there to pick the pieces if necessary.

Mick from Canada by way of Reno.

Red from the Olympic Peninsula…on the KLR…red, of course.

Canadian Club Joe.

And Bootleg Dave bringing up the rear.

More to follow…uploading videos…

Pretty funny? I would have at least used a word like "impressive".

One of my favorite places is on top of the Cinder Cone. There’s a spectacular view of the Cascades and 7 peaks including Bachelor, Broken Top, the Three Sisters, Washington and Jefferson. Here’s the fun trail to the top.

This is where we came from.

This is a fun trail. A little steeper and rockier than it looks but isn’t that always the case?

A couple short vids…

Pat and Mark

Chris…and Red’s crash! Red was okay but it took awhile to right the beastly KLR!

Red had crafted a nifty tool holder out of PVC pipe that was strategically placed on the lower frame right in front of the skid plate. While cleaning up the carnage from his get off we found out that lava rock really is harder than plastic and his tools were scattered somewhere earlier on the Cinder Cone rock fest trail. Fortunately we will be back in the general area in a few days and will see if we can recover his tools.

Once we all got to the top we didn’t spend much time taking pictures. Here’s one from a prior trip.
