Sam Hearn's Last Ride - The TAT Day 1

The most photographed church on the TAT!

I had seen a bear just past the church on our last trip through back in 2007, but no such luck today!

You can be riding along some times and then you just have to stop!

To admire this!

This is Sam's first trip though such scenery and I am sure he is loving it!

Not exactly Trike Country, but Sam is riding easy now!

Out here, you see scenery that is not visible from the highway.

Look where we are going!

I hope SAM is enjoying his ride! For the first time there are no bumps, no pot holes to dodge, everything is good!

Look who we run up on, Sam Correro himself, the God-Father of the Trans American Trail. He and his wife were riding Colorado, updating the "map set".

Billy was leading and Sam flagged him down and we talked a bit. It was his wife's first ride. I love to see the ladies out riding!

You know that you are at 8,000 feet plus when you start seeing the aspens!

We camped at the same place that we camped three years ago when we were accompanied by John, Billy's cousin.

That year it was the first part of June and the temps got well into the 20's, it only got to 34 this particular night.

We actually stopped several hours before dark and had plenty of time to enjoy the views and take a walk.

Mileage for the day was 385.

Billy's view of day 1

My name is Bill Smith from Canyon, TX. I have rode several off-road rides with my cousin, Donnie Wayne. I was glad to be a part of this memorial ride to Sam.

On day one we went from hot desert to aspens and cool pine trees. Donnie let me lead and the lack of dust was sure nice. Being July we ran across many other riders and that was fun! Especially seeing Sam C. and his wife from TAT.

Camping the first night was great at Opher Campground, which had been a favorite from a previous ride. It was still almost empty and very cold.
My new BMW bike performed very well, and Donnie's old trustworthy KLR was bullet proof as usual.

Donnie and Bill, it looks like you had some beautiful scenery to share with Sam on your TAT journey. I am sorry for your loss of a good friend. From Sam's smile, I can just bet that he was a lot of fun to hang out with. I am sure that he would be honored by your tribute ride. Godspeed, Sam.

It is 34 the next morning. Billy got cold, but I was fine! I finally zipped my sleeping bag up at 4:00AM.

We were up and ready to ride bright and early at about 8:20AM. Actually we were up two hours earlier, but was just messing around. Sam was waiting!

We had camped in the La Veta area and started out for Westcliffe, our next gas stop.

Even had a bit of pavement in the beginning, but that soon changed!
