HELP, before my head explodes!!

When I start to read about GPS I am lost in about 2 minutes.
With all the file downloading and massaging data points my head starts expanding and feels like it's ready to explode.
Then I read a ride report where someone said he used GPS to only verify where he was and used maps (OLD SCHOOL) for everything else.
Why didn't I think of that!!
I can learn some of the more basic stuff but if it gets to complicated it loses its "fun value" and the fun is in the RIDING not the downloading!

So my question is.
What GPS would you buy to do this?
I really don't want the the "latest and greatest",it just need to work out in the boonies.
My wife and I will use it for Arkansas fire trails, the easier parts of the TAT, that sort of thing.
No Central America or some other far off land.

Thanks.....Al

eTrex H

is a base model that will give you the coordinates so you can locate yourself on a paper map. It has the newer higher sensitivity chip, as opposed to the eTrex without the H.

Current standard off-road unit is 60/76Cx. They are going to be replaced by 62/78 so they are blowing them out very cheap. E-Trex will get the job done but not as user friendly with no buttons on front for each function.

agree..
but be aware there will be some time you will have to devote to get at a minimum a free streetmap on your device.
the device itself will not do you much good out of the box, and there is a learning curve.
60csx is down to 200 bucks now and a lot of free maps can for it at http://www.gpsfiledepot.com/

Hey Jerry

Do you know if the 62 will be easier to read the screen when riding into the Sun. The only complaint I have with the 60cx is I can't read the screen when the Sun is in front of me.

Colorado Pass Roads

I am interested in this topic also. I plan on riding some of the passes that Geek writes about in his thread on Rides. Are those only mining roads on any of the GPS's? If so, what would be the best GPS to get - Garmin, Delorme, etc? I am looking for something that would be of the off-road nature (but which would also include the paved roads), but once I get off-road on some of the high mountain passes, I would like to know where I am and what off-roads are there to get back other than just retracing the path up. Thanks for the info.

Tons of threads with advice. The 60/76 mentioned above do not come with maps, they are extra and yes they (CityNav or Topo) show most everything, they start with USGS maps.

Send me e-mail and I will add you to invite list. Ben Bower, Sandgrens, and Cal Bottom will probably come. Going form Middlegate to Austin, Eureka, Ely, Eureka, Belmont and back to Middlegate.

It will if the OP is trying to duplicate his buddy's "GPS to only verify where he was and used maps (OLD SCHOOL) for everything else."

Most of my motor and pedal bike riding is done with a dead-simple, non-mapping GPS.
