Door County Camping (WI)
It's odd that I've never been there, but it's about time! I'm going camping with my wife and I for our anniversary so any recommendations on camp grounds? We're using a tent fyi. Thanks!
Ben

depending on how far north you are going,
Pensula state park is nice but packed. Located in fish creek I think And depending if you like it quiet and rustic newport state park seems to be pretty desolate. Located almost to gills rock. |

+1 on Newport. Spent quite a few gorgeous nights on the shore up there. Definitely a good spot for anniversary activities...
Peninsula SP is an impressive park, but seems more of a "bring the 30' rv, let the kids cut down the saplings" kinda place.

+2 on Newport :) Not sure when you are going but bring bug spray! Lots of it! We went hiking there and got eaten alive. Great camping though. Peninsula is great as well. Both have great trails.

+3 for Newport. It may be tough to get into Peninsula S.P. at this point anyway, but it is crowded. Newport is quiet and an easy cruise to the popular places in D.C.

If you're into more of a backpack kinda thing, rock island sp is really neat. Takes a bit to get there (two ferries), but the ride is definitely part of the trip. Even if you're not a backpacker, theres plenty of sites near where the last ferry drops you off. Thing is you leave your car on washington island, and that might deter some folk.
Wherever you stay, I definately recomend a ride up to door bluff co park on the tip of the peninsula. Not really much of a park, basicly just a parking area and a trail at the end of a dirt road. But if you follow the trail allong the bluff a bit (idk, 1/8mi. or so) you come to a nice little rock ledge with an awesome (!) view of the bay and Mi. in the distance. You can also follow a trail down to the beach below. Every time I've been there, mine was the only car in the lot (read private beach). BTW, congrats on another year with the missus. |

+4 on Newport. Requires at least a mile hike to the sites though.
Can't comment on Rock Island yet, we're going there in August. If you plan to go to a state park check here for availabilility clicky You will find most state parks are full by now. As far as campgrounds in Door, well most of em are pack em tight to make the bucks type places. I'd rather stay at a bed n breakfast, at least you can shut the door

The fam & I will be at Peninsula SP next Fri & Sat. Tents can still get in there, its the 40' RV's that run out of room quickly. No water just electricity and two tents on site. They always leave room for "walk up's" at SP's.... or so I've heard.

I stayed at Peninsula SP when I visited Door County. I arrived at dusk and was able to get a nice spot without a problem. The next day I rode around the park and the town of Fish Creek. Good stuff!
