Otherwise you can turn left off of 28N by the Newcomb cemetary onto the county road then stay left when you see the signs for upper/lower works. The county road between Newcomb and North Hudson is a real nice ride and I almost always meet other bikes on it, but hardly any other traffic because folks stick to the "main roads" through the park when travelling by car.

EDIT::

I did not see the "to be continued..." part!!! sorry :)
Operose, can you actually get into Tahawanus, I took Tahawanus road till it camr to the gate with the no trespassing signs

sending you a pm

This is how I got there, it is the "in and out" spot you can see at the bottom of the loop. you are on the right road if it dead ends at a hiking trail head on the river past the old blast furnace.

If you didn't go past this you were in the wrong spot

GhOST Towns Part 2

Heading west on Blue Ridge for 18 miles brought me to a right on Tahawus Road so right I went and spent 4 hours or so meandering around Tahaus and Essex county Route 25 , highly recommended for anyone riding the area

I found Opoloscent road (from the original map directions) and it too looked promising for a few short seconds until,,,

Security is getting lax, only 4 locks this time

And beyond that gate

The end of the road is here, which sucked. Security was even more relaxed here, only 1 lock

I believe these are mine tailings, they lined the roads with berms made of these and they're spilling dom the hills and heaped in large piles elsewhere.

The scenery along the way was sweet too

Essex County Route 25 up next

Hey Joe, your bike is a beast! Liked the first photograph in the last set due to the beast but the sixth photo with the river in the background & tall willowy grass was relaxing.

My riding has been limited to work but my daughter who is 15 joined me for Colors in the Catskills a few weeks back. She's decided on a 650GS X-Country. I'm smiling.....

Safe riding, Beth

I id go that way as you'll see in the next post - more locked gates (unless I didn't see a turn that would take me there)

Weird, maybe they gated more stuff since I was there last year? Gated roads are our greatest resource here in the North Country...

That would seem really strange to me though as there is a hiking trailhead or two, up past the blast furnace and when I was there the second time last year a school bus full of local high school students showed up for an art class field trip. There was a parking lot with an outhouse past the remaining Tahawus houses which are mostly fallen in now, and then a gated road which was the hiking trailhead.

I will go back to check it out, probably in the spring though. Keep up the good riding

Thanks Prometheus ...and Operose for that matter for the details so far.

I'll be riding down in that area next June and really want to check out the town.

Hopefully it is still accessible.

Looking forward to some more details come spring.

Also ...I do not see them gating it off if they are going to so much work on signs and educational materials for the area.

Those rock cairns are the sign of a guy with way too much time on his hands.
And he punched a guy running his sawmill because he thought knocked them over. But the guy had not. I am going with a jerk that smokes a lot of dope. The cairns are for his dead dog.
It's 420 man. Huuuuusht...want a hit?
