Hurricane Road Keene NY

Hurricane Road runs from Keene NY to Route 9n

It's a 6 mile route with serious twisties, the videos don't do it justice

If you go be forewarned - there's a generous amount of sand and small rocks in the vast majority of the turns pretty much guaranteeing you more than a few sphincter puckering moments.

In addition as you can see in the videos there;s also a generous amount of cracks in the road, all these factors make it tough to pick out and stick to a good line.

Also when the turn signs say 15 and 20 mph believe them

If you go - from Route 73 in Keene turn at the town hall and you're there.

Be very careful, this is a deceiving road and should not be taken lightly.

Until last October, I lived in Lake Placid, and for twelve years, rode every season.

The northern Adirondack roads see tough winters, and as a result need to be repaved every half dozen years or so. It is nice to be able to get on the good ones right after a repave.

And there is the sand. Sand mixed with salt is used all winter, and if you ride early in the season, you must watch for sand in the corners. Dirty corners can give you a slide you do not want. If possible, ride the roads after the county and town crews have cleaned the winter debris.

Here are my favorites.

The Wilmington notch. NY 86 from Wilmington to Lake Placid. Do it late in the day after Labor Day, preferably on a weekday, so as not to encounter traffic. We called them 46ers, the tourists who lock their cars on 46 mph through all the roads that have 55 mph limits. If you are lucky to be the only one on the road, ride it both ways, twice.

Hurricane road in Keene. Someone put up a video doing it here. Southbound on 9N from the Y corner in the village, turn L on East Hill Road just up from the corner. Watch for dirty corners.

Essex county 6 from just E of the Northway exit 60. Turn N onto it from US9. Ride to Mineville. Turn around and reverse it. No decreasing radius turns, everything is done in one gear. Fast.

The back side of Whiteface mountain, Wilmington thru Union Falls to Bloomingdale. Begin at W'ton at the NY 86 stop sign, go as if you are going to do the Whiteface Memorial Highway, but bear R onto the county road just before the Stevens Lake toll house. Nice curves, and you will have it to yourself, just about all the time.

River Road in Lake Placid. Turn onto it just N of the bridge over the Ausable on NY73, right near the ski jumps. The other end connects to the notch road, NY86. Do this one at dawn or just a little before, in middle to late fall.

Haselton road from Wilmington to Black Brook. Nice throughout, particularly the N end as it follows the brook. Coming down it from the N, from Black Brook, there is a corner that is always dirty after the brookside twisties. The local cagers take that corner far inside and it always leaves a little gravel on the edge, right where you want to put your line.

The magnificent NY 8. From way down below Speculator where 365 tees into it above Ohio, north up to its end at Hague on Lake George, there are some great sections. The little over-the-hump part from Wevertown to Riparius is best done twice so you know how the tight curve plays. The last section over the hill at Graphite near Hague is nice, and the part along Brant Lake has curves best done in early dawn hours when everyone is still asleep.

Want dirt? Jay Mountain Road up from Jay turns to dirt at the Styles Brook Road, and it will take you over a notch to Lewis. Our family camps are along that road, so keep the noise down. If you hear shots fired, don't worry.

The high peaks region has problems for motorcyclists that want to do the twisties at barely-legal speed, meaning speed limit plus maybe 8. It is just too close to some big major metro areas, and thus there are tourist gawkers and bicyclists clogging things up. Another big problem is excess law enforcement. The NY state police train their new troopers there and there is, in effect, triple coverage.

Jay NY to Wilmington NY via Route 86

About a 5 mile ride, great scenery and spectacular views of Whiteface Mountain

Beautiful, but too early. They're starting to turn high up out here as well.
The sumac, but not the scrub oak yet, is already turning in our yard.

Agreed, it does seem too early. Starting Thursday the dreaded Polar Vortex makes a return dropping day time highs into the low to mid 60's

Route 3 just outside of Saranac Lake same day as last pic

Beautiful

I will be in Saranac Lake the weekend of the 19th and hoping to see some fall color while I'm there, this looks promising. Unfortunately I will be on four wheels not two : (

I have vacationed every year of my life in the northern Adirondacks, and for dozen years ending last October, we lived there. I know all those places seen in your excellent photos.

Next time near Jay, ride the little short Glen loop. Up Glen road past Ward Lumber (just up from the covered bridge site), turn L at Trumbull Corner onto Jay Mountain Road, then when its pavement ends at Styles Brook Road, go down Styles Brook Road to its bottom end at NY 9N. The middle part is a dirt/gravel road, and our family property is on both sides of it for the first half mile.

Check out the good swimming holes. Hulls Falls (closed to public now) along Hulls Falls Road in Keene. The Ausable Rapids above the covered bridge in Jay. Bouquet River just above where it comes down out of the high peaks to the W of the Chapel Pond Road (NY 73 S of Keene Valley), and the exciting and dangerous triple falls of the Bouquet at Split Rock Falls, not far S of where 73 splits from US 9. And there is always Chapel Pond. You know where they all are, I'm sure.

Speaking of the Bouquet, I liked taking Essex county 12 (I think I have the number right) that follows it, from just N of Elizabethtown, heading E toward the lake. Run it over to Wadhams then do the run up to almost Essex, then turn L on another county road to return over to US 9. All those roads over there are beautiful, and very lightly traveled.

And if anyone rides up to see some fall color, eat cheap.

Also from today's PostStar:

This week, dining out wont require customers to splurge.
Lake George Area Restaurant Week is in full swing through Saturday. At various restaurants throughout the area, diners can get three courses for $20.14. Its the perfect opportunity to try a new restaurant.
Check out www.lake georgechamber.com to see the special menus at 16 different restaurants in Lake George, Bolton Landing and Queensbury.
