Not too far today...

...REALLY not too far! So. Today I didn't get off work til 0830 and by the time I got home and showered and in bed it was after 0900. I knew friends from IA would be here this morning and they got in a lil after 1100. I chatted with them for a bit and then laid down for another 45 minutes...and then it was beer fest time! Thank Goddess Josh cooked us a great breakfast (at 1300). We met friends down in the park to taste some beer and then all came back to our apartment for a cook-out on the deck; beef and fresh zucchini from IA

Oh shit...I forgot I was sposed to have bacon for the steaks. No worries; I need to get at least a lil ride in today to say I was on the bike and Safeway is only two blocks away. So my friend Tracey's friend Corey and I saddle up Lil Mule and are off on a bacon run!

doG bless the valve adjustment; she now starts on the first kick almost every time...

And we're off! Yes, I know...not ATGATT and I always am. The truth is that we were laughing so much that it didn't even bother me...

Whew...

...we've had friends from IA here for the past five days that just left this morning...so time to get caught up!

Sunday 07.11.2010

I rode Lil Mule and Josh, Randy and Rochelle followed in the jeep to Marshall Pass. Randy and Rochelle had just come in from IA and wanted to climb a mountain so they hiked around the base of Mt Ouray to get a lil more acclimatized while Josh and I took turns buzzing around on Lil Mule.

At the trailhead we ran into a group of mountain bikers and one came over to ask questions about Lil Mule and riding in general. I let him take a quick spin just around the trailhead and the smile on his face was priceless! I wish I would've had my camera out and ready...in any case I directed him here to ADV and told him he'd find more information than he would ever need...

Josh's turn...

Josh had to get back to town to work, so he took Lil Mule and I took the visitors over the other side of Marshall Pass and up and over Monarch Pass to see a lil more of the country before we came back to cook supper.

Randy, Rochelle and I got up around 0430 to go climb Missouri Mtn. The 4x4 road up to where we parked to start the hike is one of the roughest I've taken the Jeep up and I think it'll be a goal for the end of this season; I want to wait until the two water crossings are hopefully at lower levels.

After the hike we took a nap and then I took Lil Mule out CR 175 to CR 182...

I split off onto 181c (which might be a forest road?) My first time on this road last year I saw the biggest herd of elk I've ever seen running across this meadow...

End of the road. Makes me wonder if there used to be something up here...

At the bottom of that hill 181c actually goes down to the south. When Carl showed me this road last year I asked him where it went and he thought it circled back on either itself or back to 182. I decide to go check it out. Up and over a few ridges and it dead-ends...

Coming back was a bit of challenge due to the fact that I kept getting blinded by the sun. I got pretty good at memorizing the road in front of me and paying attention to when I was going to be coming out of shadow and getting the sun in my face...and then riding by memory for a second or two.

After this ride I want to find sunglasses that cut the glare better than mine. I think it's also time to invest in a SPOT for these solo rides...

So...I didn't ride on Tuesday. My Jeep had a flat tire I needed to get fixed and some other annoying errands I needed to get out of the way. I showed Randy and Rochelle around downtown and then took them up to Aspen Ridge to some old mining ruins and my favorite grove of aspens for Rochelle to shoot (she's a photographer). On the way back into town we stopped at Vino Salida for a tour and wine tasting with my friend Steve. Then...back home to grill out and drink wine with a bunch of other friends on our deck. Originally I planned just a short lil nighttime ride to the top of S Mtn...but the wine and the stories were flowing freely and it was pretty late when everyone left. I still had the energy to do the ride...just not the sobriety Sometimes good times with friends trumps even my goals...

You may be able to get a better deal on the prior model than the newest model. Still have to pay for the service, but it may help costs. We're looking at one too for our various trips. The day of my accident, though we were on the highway only one person's cell phone got enough signal to call 9-1-1 and my husband. That is not uncommon around here.
