Mine has this sweet whistle right around 5K RPM's. The sweet spot, quick jump with a crack of the throttle and a good bit of motor breaking to. Maybe that's why I'm only getting 37ish MPG

I also get a weird chugging sound if I idle in neutra

150 miles

I took a short 150 mile trip this past sunday to Natural Bridge State Park (Slade, Ky) and realized that the Tiger is the best purchase I have made in many, many years. Maybe dating back to college (buying condoms!!).

I do think risers are needed but not sure what height would help.

Also, I added a HOLAN 38L Topcase so, throwing my leg over is out of the question. Do you guys think it's okay to step on the foot-peg and step over the seat. I'm not sure if the kick-stand can hold my 200 lbs continuously putting all my weight on it.

I have considered a center-stand but have seen posts about people who love and hate them??

Really? Is it mounted on the rear rack or the pillion seat? I'm thinking about getting the GlobeScout case, which will probably have the same footprint. Right now, I sometimes use the OEM 50L case mounted on the rear rack, and, being as far back as it is, have never had an issue with it getting in the way of me mounting the bike. I assumed a hard top case would be in more or less the same position and not in the way.

The Whine is from the straight cut Primary Gears, not the
Cam Gears. The cam is chain driven .

It's not totally in the way. I'm just not as flexible as I once was. I am 6'1" and enjoyed just kicking my foot over. Now stepping on the foot-peg was like a light-bulb turning on the first time I did. Way easier to mount the kitty.

You probably won't have an issue. Mine sits pretty far back. It's mounted on the rear rack. Again, Long legs + stiff joints= using the foot-peg.

From the replies to armydoc, it looks like several owners feel entirely comfortable with their T800's reliability.

Any dissenting opinions? Any known issues, like BMW final drive problems, or Wee Strom ugliness?

My wife and I are on our fourth modern Triumph. We sold our Bonneville and Scrambler and she now rides a Street Triple R and I have my Tiger 800XC. All the Triumphs have been completely reliable, even more so than the Honda CBF1000 I traded in on the Tiger. That was the least reliable *vehicle*, not just bike I've ever owned. I would say the Triumphs are as reliable as any Japanese bike. Last thing I would worry about.

I've put XC risers on my Roadie and like it. Note that the handle bars are also different so it's not a 1:1 thing between the two. I have tried Rox and overall I plain like the XC risers better. Ever so slight forward lean helps my back on long rides.

I also to have a center stand. I don't like the Triumph one very much but I doubt that SW Motech or H&B are any better.

Both bikes I have (TE630 and XC) there are a lot of owners that set the bars taller. At 5-10 I get by with them stock. There are certain times when it feels like taller would be better, but in rough going you just hunch down anyway. Put some miles on it and then decide.

I also rolled my tiger bars all the way up to the last line on the bars. It puts me in attack mode, is better standing up and once your muscles adapt it's comfortable for long haul. I ride one handed on the freeway a lot to relax, and I like to stop for breaks.

The centerstand is a pita, it clanks occasionally in rough going, and it's kinda hard to put the bike up on it. However I wouldn't own an adventure bike that you couldn't service in the field and it's perfect for that so I think it's a must have. The oem one works just fine, it's just a pita.

Again, thanks for the input. I'm definitely going with the risers first. The center stand will probably be purchased later on.

I've really enjoyed riding this bike all winter. I hate (seriously hate) cold weather and rode with the temps down in the teens and highs in the 20's... that's love!!
