I crossed the border and met Blair for breakfast in North Vancouver. We headed north via the Sea to Sky Highway on a gorgeous morning:

We flew right by Whistler, gassed up in Pemberton, and then got some more coffee.

The view:

The area north of Pemberton, before we got on the Hurley Rd, is really beautiful.

We made a stop in Gold Bridge to top off our tanks, but the one station in town was dry. Apparently they had been waiting several days. Fortunately, we both have large tanks so we didn't worry too much about it. We then headed north to Blair's destination for this trip. He wanted to check out an old mining road that he knows from mountain biking. There is an old cabin at the top with a great view and that's where he wanted to camp.

It started out innocent enough:

And then:

In many places, the trail was completely overgrown with plenty of mud etc thrown in.

Then we came to our first obstacle: a damaged bridge:

We unloaded all of our luggage to make our bikes as light as possible. The other side was very steep (of course the pics don't do it justice as always), loose, and sloped to the left. The best line would have been to cross on the right side of the bridge, but the problem was that the boards were loose and you would flip off. So we had to go right down the center. Blair went first, and I'll just say it wasn't pretty on the other side. Finally, with me pushing, we got him up the hill to a flat spot. Now I was freakin nervous. We talked it over and decided to walk it over and up the hill with him pushing. "Ok", he said, "It should be pretty easy after this!"

The trail was pretty steep and techinal for our large beasts. Here Blair clipped a hard bag on a tree and wiped out. I think he's wondering when I'm going to stop taking pictures and help him pick up the KTM! (Hey, I asked him if he was all right first!)

We also had to cross several large patches of snow. Pushing the bikes uphill in snow really sapped our energy.

We pushed on but were stopped by a good sized tree over the trail:

Fortunately (or maybe unfortunately ), Blair had a saw on him. "Dwight, it's awesome up by the cabin. It'll be worth it!" The saw worked very nicely, but it still took a while as the tree was a foot in diameter and needed to be cut in 2 spots. We had to take several breaks and we were getting hungry and dog tired. It was a very hot day. It was after 6 now and we hadn't eaten much since breakfast at 8 and we were both low on water. We just wanted to reach camp.

"It seemed a lot easier on a mountain bike!"

We cruised up hill for a little while but the snow was getting deeper. We both got stuck and had to help push eachother out. I told Blair that this was the last obstacle for the day. I had to rest a bit and get some food in me.

Finally, we saw that the snow was just too much near the top.

We almost made it but it was still too far to hike in so we just decided to park it and make dinner.

Here's Blair realizing what all those bumps and tipovers did to his food. Everything was covered in some sort of sauce.

It was very nice up there though:

It was pretty hard taking pics up there because it was full sun or full shade. But at least I know my relective gear works!

Awesome! Minus the trees, I ran into a similar snow impasse last year. Same thing, very late in the day, with many snow sections powered through, only to have to turn around at the road being completely buried under 6 feet of snow for as far as we could see, and not much light left in the day. This makes me want to head for the Kootenays tomorrow (closer than the coast for me, but similar riding).

More please.

We finally got down to a large flat area and set up camp.

Did I haul around a full size tri-pod just to get 1 good camping pic? You bet!

Good night dear!

The bear crashing through the woods about 30 yards away from us as we got ready for bed really comforted me. It got unbelievably cold that night and I couldn't sleep at all. I didn't bring any warm clothing and a medium sleeping bag. I mean- it's the middle of the summer and it was 95 degrees a few hours ago! Live and learn I guess!
