The "Better get a ride in before family vacation" RR

Every year I head up in Northern New-Brunswick a few times just to see what's shakin' up in them parts. I used to live in that area and snowmobile them parts of the province, but since i've moved to the southern part of NB, this ride gives me a chance to see places I used to visit more often, and drop in unanounced on a few old friends.

As for the title...

For the last two weeks, I was warning my wife that I needed to get out on the bike for either an overnighter or a nice big one day loop. You see, family vacation is coming up, and that is usually the time where the keys for my bikes get taken away from me to spend some time with the family. I've been overdue for a ride because the last time I was out was over a week ago (but that trip was planned for weeks).
I know that sounded terrible right?... I mean... terrible for me.
I even called on a couple of other cohorts to come and join me, but they're too busy with their family to spend some quality time rippin' through the dirt roads of northern NB.
OMG, am I that terrible of a father???
So yesterday morning, my wife packs up the kids in the SUV and head up towards her parents in Tracadie for the day, and I pack the GS and head up in the same general area, just a little more westward when I get to Miramichi...

Saturday July 24th
So I get up that morning and check the weather, looks like I’m in luck, the day is going a mix of sun and clouds, and not blistering hot. The decision was made then and there I wasn’t going to Tracadie with the rest of the family, but mounting a steed of the two wheeled type for a day adventure in Northeastern NB. As the ad says…. Be…. In this place, or something along those lines.
Sipping on coffee and packing the bike simultaneously, I get ready and head up out of Dieppe and up McLaughlin Dr and follow Route 490 right up to Bass River. Highway 490 gets you out of the urban jungle quick enough to make you feel you’re out in the countryside. It feels good.
When you get to Ste Marie, you start on dirt roads, which after a large rainfall can get pretty tricky as the mud in that area can turn into snot that gets in between the knobs and stay there. But not today, it was easy going. Lots of moose tracks and bear tracks neither one of them I want to physically encounter while riding these roads at the clip I was going.
After a while you get to Browns Yard. This location is pretty quaint and is mostly a summer home community where the wealthy business people from the Moncton area come to escape for the weekends. The Taylors that own Taylor Ford have a shack in the area.

Not too far from this location you hook up to Route 116 in Bass River and take a left towards Harcourt. There’s absolutely nothing in Bass River except for logging, hunting, and fishing. For the last few years, logging and fishing have almost but disappeared except for the stray trout fisherman, and the firewood industry. So hunting season, this place goes mad. In Harcourt, you hang a right on the 126 and head towards Rogersville. A quick blow of the horn and wave to the fella that’s been making moose calls from birch bark at the corner of the main road and the Salmon River road, for longer than I can remember. If you ever stop in to see him, he most surely will tell ya that his moose calls will attract the biggest males to the point that if you don’t pay attention to your surroundings, you’ll more than likely get raped by two of them at the same time during the rut. Through Rogersville and on to Miramichi for gas and lunch supplies. A quick break and a conversation with a guy that argued with me that BMW bikes were not made in Germany but in fact made in Russia. I decided to politely tell him that I should be on my way with my Ural. I think the poor guy was getting his old Socialist countries mixed up, but who was I to argue. The bike is partially made in Austria by Rotax.
On to Wayerton and to the old Heath Steele mines site, and cross the bridge of the Nepisiguit River to the Popple Depot Road.

I finally got to Popple Depot Road at 11:00.

Hey…. I’m back…

After the Nepisiguit river bridge, I turn left on Popple Depot Rd and head towards Governor’s Lodge. About 9 Km down that road is the turnoff onto snomo trail 507 for a short jaunt of 6 Km, and then west and north on trail 22. I stopped by a nice brook with small cascading waterfalls, and a nice camp.

So on forth we go, the road get narrower and rougher in a couple of spots, but nothing a big bike can’t handle. After a while I get within eyeshot of the Caribou wind farm. Quite a spectacular place, a lot better view and landscape than Kent county. If you’re on the Resources road and stop by the entry to the wind farm site, there is a map indicating where all the turbines are located. If you can get to unit C-21, there’s a spectacular view to which you can count all the turbines.

Not too far from Island Lake now…

So I start zipping up the trail, and see the tell tale signs that trouble might be lying ahead by hanging ribbons from the side of the road. So I get on the binders, and within a few moments I get to this.

Once I get to the resources road I hang a left and shortly hang a right indicated by a sign on the side of the road up to Island Lake Club.

The road up to Island lake is a little bit of a roller coaster ride, and I enjoy riding this road standing up most of the way and the fresh grader pass just makes it a bit more interesting. I bought some lunch supplies in Miramichi, and decide to stop at the warming hut where trail #22 and #19 intersect.

Left to St-Quentin, and right to Island Lake, Balmoral, Dalhousie…

After trying to make a peace offering of ringolos to a poor pissed off squirrel that was making more noise than a moose running through the woods, I headed off to Island Lake to wash down my lunch. Island Lake has quite a history, and it’s quite interesting to read about it. But in order to do that, you gotta go visit the place. They make a decent meal for a decent price, and the beverages are always cold. The Island Lake Club has received some government funds to create walking trails around the lake, and improve their facilities. One sad thing about it is that they’re in the process or tearing down the cabins on site and building a motel type structure that will be more modern to attract more tourists. Too bad really, if a tourist really wants a taste of what it’s like being in the woods, this was a great place. I think the motel will ruin the whole concept of being in the woods.
Would you tear these down in order to trade for a hotel type room?

So after a quick chat with the caretakers, and some of the campers I head off and backtrack a bit to get on trail 19 going east to the Sormany Clubhouse. This road is great fun with some puddles that are fun just lofting the front wheel over. They’re not deep, and all of them with a hard bottom.

Once I get back to civilization, I stop in Beresford to see my one of my old buddies. He’s fixing up a late 80’s mustang, and I hadn’t seen it from the time he had brought it home. He made a lot of changes to it including a blower and some other things that I don’t know much about. I spent about an hour there and kept going to Bathurst for gas.

In Bathurst, I call m wife to see if she was going to stay in Tracadie overnight or go back to Moncton. She says she’s heading back to Moncton, so I start planning my ride back.

I head up the mines road and go through the Pabineau first nation reserve, and go have a look see at Pabineau Falls. It was a great time to go see as the recent rain had made for some spectacular pictures. I just wish my wife would let me use her Nikon DSLR.

I keep heading up the reserve road and connect to route 360 (Key Anacon Rd?) and get back on the Mines Rd and the dirt road that bring me back to the Nepisiguit River bridge near the Rogers Lake Camps.

On the way down that road, I’m going a good clip at a bad time of day… I knew it and I didn’t give a flyin’ f***. On the corner of my eye I see this 4 legged creature and get on the binders… Well she didn’t even move… so I turn around to get some pics, but as soon as I do the stupidest thing I could’ve done ie: shut off my bike, she start slowly walking towards the woods. I whistle a couple of time and she turns around to have a look…

I like these critters, just not while they're trying to share the road with me.

So off to Miramichi, and on to Route 11 to fasttrack my ride home. A small break was needed near Kouchibouguac to relieve some of the floating eyeball syndrome I had been feeling for the last 10 minutes, so I stop at the old hydro dam right by the highway.

I kept on route 11 to route 15, and booted my ass back to Moncton double time in order to shower before the rest of them got home…. The end..

Total Km travelled : 614Km
Moving time: 8h02m
Stopped time: 3h57m
Max speed: 172 KPH (not bad loaded with bags and knobbies) hehehe.
