Has anyone heard of the aldi 4wd winch, apparently they were on special some time ago, does anyone remember when, or has it been more than once, i am looking at a cheap option for my hilux, and apparently they were good gear for the price.

cheers

They have been coming up annually for a few years now. Almost got one a couple of times, but I never get the ute bogged or stuck on a hill.... much

Like all Aldi stuff, good value for the money, and they are into customer service, so if there is a problem they want it sorted.

Tirfor for now, but one day.

Tirfor better.. can winch forwards, backwards and sideways Plus it never runs out of battery, though may run out of puff!

Yep, pulled a fire truck, a 4wd Cat 7 Mits Canter tanker out of a bog the other week. After draining it would still have been over 3 tonnes, and down to the pumpkins at both ends. Had to drive it too else it'd never move with the Tirfor alone.

I don't like the weight of a winch on the front of the 4wd for normal driving, too heavy. I also feel that they sit out in the weather and crap for years on end, and without routine maintenance and testing are likely not to work if ignored and then you need it.

My thinking was to get a cheap winch like the Aldi, fit a synthetic rope to save some weight, and build a frame so its portable, and have long enough leads so it'll work all around the vehicle like a Tirfor. Then maybe a carry case, like a Spacecase, and toss it on the back with the rest of the recovery gear when going bush. One day, maybe.

I bought a "NEW 12V 3000LBS /1361KG ELECTRIC WINCH + WIRELESS BOAT" from a crowd called Princess Trading in Hallam, Victoria via the online auction site who shall not be named here for about $56. It came with a cable remote and a wireless remote, a mounting plate and a 4 roller cable guide. It would be easy to mount one to a 2" square steel section for dragging yourself backwards out of mistakes or to mount to a bullbar. The same crowd are currently selling a 12000lb winch.

Or try Tigerz11. One of the guys I worked with bought one.. he seemed to think it was ok. He mounted it a cradle for front or rear use.
Then again, he does have a Patrol, so it probably got lots of use!

I've got a 2wd Japanese ute which I've never bogged...

Past observation suggests that the more extreme the 4wd and it's equipment, the more likely it will be bogged somewhere by about 3pm on Saturday.

Got a similar thing that I use in the shed for getting big stuff up to the mezzanine storage area. Run it off a 12v jump starter.

3pm Saturday? That means you still have all day Sunday to get home!

Try 4pm Sunday, the middle of winter, it's snowing, you start your new job tomorrow, you're stuck at the bottom of a hill, you're not on the track you thought you were and you have no maps! True story, but it wasn't one 4wd, try 12!
NOTE: Never trust anyone who claims not to need no stinking maps because they think they know the area!

You do know the definition of a 4wd?

It's a device to take you further into the sh*t before getting completely bogged!

I have a friend who owns a Pinzgauer 6wd and another who has a Tatra 8wd.
They have military grade stuckness capacity...

You've met Peter and his Pinnie, or just generally?

His right hand drive gearshift is a thing of beauty, as is the power steering conversion.

No, never met him......just in awe of the method they use in the drive train........central tube chassis....everything hangs from the tube, portal axles ala Unimog.

Almost bought one in the 70's but at $26,000 at the time, mypockets were not that deep.

First heard of Peter thru a friend, then someone else gave me a vid of them (2x Pini's and a V8 Landrover) going thru Rabbit Patch. We tried the same track and only got a few hundred metres along it!
Have a look at Peters web pages, and while I would like a Pinzgauer, I really wanted a Haflinger! First saw one of these in the early 80's in a factory next to where I worked in North Melbourne.
