San Xavier Del Bac Mission

The weather was nice yesterday in Hell's Waiting Room or the Valley of the Sun as others call a bit more pleasantly. Normally I reserve my rides down south for the "winter time" in Arizona. It is Monsoon season here and the Tucson area did not show brewing storms and a comfortable temperature of 95 only.
The San Xavier Del Bac Mission is always worth a stop but I have not been there for a few years because the Mission was obstructed by scaffolding for the past years. From the compound I took a little detour over the Kelvin-Florence Highway to get some dirt in along the way and my weapon of choice for the day was the GSA.

From Marana I took the back road through the Tucson Mountain Park and had lunch at a unremarkable dive on Kenney Road. Outside the place I found this:

It was a nice looking car but some schmuck put cheap plastic hub caps on it. I am not a car guy but pretty sure that this is not accurate for the time frame of this car.

A little cowgirl ambiance in front of the restaurant.

The Mission San Xavier del Bac is from the late 1700' when Southern AZ ws part of new Spain. The architect was Ignacio Gaona who built the mission with the help of the O'odham Indians.

After Mexican independence in 1821, the mission became part of Mexico. With the Gadsen Purchase, San Xavier became part of the United States and joined the Diocese of Santa Fe in 1859.

In 1866, Tucson became an independent Diocese and Franciscan sisters been teaching there ever since.

In the meantime in the parking lot:

The Thing

She was walking on holy grounds

A few images from the garden

This brat was giving his sister and parents hell. I miss the lil' bastard already

This way to the parking lot

Some of the Mosaics:

The Guard Dog. He is not dead, just really hot. There is no air conditioning in the Mission.

Not too far down from San Xavier is another Mission, Tumacacori. I will visit there soon and then add this to this report.

Enjoy the pictures my friends.
I am not homeless. I live in a bus!

Cool photos, I'll have to get back down there now that the scaffolding is down.
