Get the newest you can afford. Ideally a twin cam, but they didn't come out until 2010. Good luck, and don't forget to put some pictures on here once you get one.

if 06 with ABS, avoid the model with 100 little wholes.
Prefer the Z48 ring (from 08/2006)

FOR VEHICLES WITH I-ABS GENERATION 2 (CODE: X630A) :
34 52 7 680 476 SENSOR RING - Z=48 (from 08/06)

Get the '08. '06 and '07 have servo brakes.

@ StuartV
not true.
Build date from 08/2006 are OK.
Visual difference on ABS sensor ring is easy to check.

No servos on my 07, nor TXjames'. But I'd look for an '08 with the "enduro transmission" if you ride anything dirtier than graded dirt.

05, 06, are the first generation R1200GS. If these have ABS, most do, it's the less desirable "servo" ABS. 2007 is the same only with out the "servo".

2008 and 09 are the second generation having an improved (larger) transmission bearing, updated Motronic, higher compression, a few more HP, adjustable handlebars and some cosmetic changes.

As others have said all things equal the newer the better.

Geez just a simple question turns into a shit fight, if only people would use forums for useful info, why dont the trolls open their own forum and solve the problems of the world there. cheers for the positive and formative replys.

That is the correct answer. There is nothing "wrong" with servo brakes but given a choice, I'd opt not to have them. Given the choice, I prefer the enduro transmission that comes on the 08/09. The bars are better as well.
