N.W. Montana Loop via Sidehack

Our July 4th. sidehack camping "trip" was a bust with a broken engine only 100 miles from home. I finally scrounged up the parts needed and got the old BMW "Mongrel" running this week. So we'll try again, this time we've reserved a couple more days for a leisurely trip. We'll cross the Little Belt Mountains and Big Belt Mountains, over to Helena's "Last Chance Gulch". The route will take us along the Swan Range and the Mission Mountain Range. Eventually we'll get up to the Flathead Lake / Big Fork area then through Glacier Nat. Park. Not a very long jaunt, about 700 miles or so, but there should be some fine photo ops' along this route.
So wish us luck and we'll hope the "Mongrel" doesn't bite me again...photos to follow

The "Mongrel"

I spent a year in Helena a few years ago... Sure miss that area!

I know that country fairly well and am looking forward to this.

A few photos...many are taken while underway by the sidecar passenger

"Big Sky Country"

Heading towards the Big Belt Mountains

Rural Church

Canyon Ferry Reservoir, near Helena MT.

The ever present construction in Mt. Of course I always get right behind the water truck...

Day two was pretty hazy...big thunderstorms last night so maybe from moisture in the air?

Near McDonald Pass

Swan Lake Mt.

Lake McDonald

The construction of this road in the 30's must have been a tough go.

The "Triple Arch Bridge"...One of the arches sits on a wedge which might not be there forever...

Not sure of this peaks name

Near Logan Pass looking west back on the road cut.

A number of miles of gravel, pretty slimey when it rains I bet.

A lot of construction on the pass. One lane road in a few places. They have automated traffic lights to keep things in order. Lots of traffic as usual.

St. Mary Lake

East of the Park

A big fire years back gives the area a different look.

Back towards the East and the plains.

The "Mongrel" brought us home safe and sound. She gave me a couple of hiccups through the exhaust late today so time to reset valves, timing and points I figure.
