RD's are tough!

I bought my RD 400D brand new in spring of 1978 for $1088. Still have it. Trying to get it running right, carb issues. Back in around 1979, one of the piston skirts grenaded, made a lot of noise, but I was able to RIDE it home, maybe 20 miles. Picked the aluminum bits out of the engine, installed 2 new pistons, ran fine!! Then 20K miles and 20 years later, burned a hole in a piston, but again, STILL RAN home.. This time the cylinder was trashed, so I went 1st oversize, again, ran fine. Hardy motor, simple, yet strong. Did a few 12 hour 600+ mile days on it back then, no complaints. Love the looks I get when riding it..

Good luck with this one! Keep the updates coming!

They're like a big buffer between the carbs and the cylinders.

my friends dad has one or two of these. one was a 20 year project with more money sunk into it than it cost to pay off his house, which he did earlier this year. I honestly think he's sunk around $20-50k into this bike, although it certainly doesnt look it. lots of little bits here and there, plus the spare pieces.

they're quick little buggers considering the power and size.

throw some new plugs in, check/clean your points, verify your condenser is good. I went through this a lot on my friend's RD. he's bad with this stuff, I'm not.
