Hank's Montana "That Guy" Tour.

Meet Hank:

Ooops! Dad blumit, wrong end!

Here's Hank.

Hank never was "that guy," so he got to lead us five inmates on a 500+ mile mostly dirt --- very . mostly . dirt . --- tour of middle of nowhere Montana.

Seriously, five hundred miles where we stopped at every gas station, all three of them. (And we had to go out of our way for one.)

Let's introduce the cast of characters:

Hank rides monkey for Paul (BozoMoto), who lives in Bozeman.

He was "that guy" when he left the beer cooler at the camp ground when we went to the hot springs.

He rides a Ural Patrol. Or is it drives ... pilots ... captains, that's it!

Brad (sproutxj) lives in Bozeman, too.

He was "that guy" when he drank my damn water before I could make my damn oatmeal.

He rides a Suzuki DR650, I believe?

He says it's too small for him. I'll PM you his paypal addy if you want to donate to his future KTM950.

John (MTDewX8) lives in Great Falls.

He was "that guy" when, over a minor geological feature in the middle of a friggen cow pasture, he decides to let his bike have a rest and hold a damn yardsale with the contents of his panniers.

He rides one of them aformentioned sweet orange ninefiddies.

Baron (Badassbobthecatllerustler) lives way the heck up in Flathead Lake area.

He was "that guy" who, having started at freekin' four o'clock in the morning to drive the 250 miles, arives ten whole minutes late for the start, AND THEN has to unlode his friggen bike off a Trailor!

Who --- the . Hell --- starts a damn ADVenture with a TRAILOR?

He rides a Suzuki DRZ400S.

He's a stealthy bastage, and this is the only decent picture of his bike I got --- and I take a lot of pix.

Last is me Tyll (Putts). Sorry, couldn't take a picture of me through a hole in the wall.

I was "that guy" when I thought there was gas in Jackson, , and we had to endure fourty more miles of pavement across the oft coldest place in America, the Big Hole Valley.

I ride an '85 BMW R80G/S.

Again, I couldn't take a picture of myself on the bike, and again "that guy," 'cuz I'm gunna post a big pic of my bike.

We didn't mind sharing the "that guy" duties of course because Hank was always at the ready to lead the way.

Over the next week or so as we unload our cameras and prosaicly regurgitate our experience, we hope you'll enjoy
these guys in this "that guy" tour.

Hank

Good intro, sounds interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of Hank. (The right end of him of course. I think I've seen enough of the wrong end.)

The That Guys Start

The perfect lead-in, Brad and John: What are these miles of which we speak?

(BTW Brad, your GPS is dirty. )

It all started when I decided to see if I could create a long weekend ride around Southwest Montana that had as much dirt as possible. Let's take a look.

For all you international folks, Montana borders Canada in the northwestern United States. Our route is is under all the markers.

Let's look a little closer, here's tha map of Montana. Our route actually includes a bit of the Continental Divide Trail
and the moutains we bounce around through are part of the Rocky Mountain range.

Here's a closup of the route. We started at "L" in Bozeman; then go southwest to "B"; and follow around in alphabetical order 'til we get back to Bozeman.

It was a bit of a staggered start and finish, however, as John rode down from Great Falls the night before; Baron trailered his bike in from the Flathead; and we met Paul in Ennis. But basically, the main important part of the route from "B" to "K" is about 500 miles, with possibly a bit more than 350 miles of dirt road---some wide open and very good, to roads that were not much more than cow paths and four-wheeler trails.

The weather was pretty sketchy; the forcast showed medium misery for Saturday, but an ever increasing likelyhood of better weather over the weekend. By golly, the weather man was right for once; you'll notice the pix getting ever more balmy as the report progresses.

The first to show was John on his KTM 950 on Friday night.

He settled into in the "map room" at Chez Putts, and we poured over the maps and ride to come as we ate the standard fair of beer and brats for dinner and eggs and bacon for brecky. Your standard ADVsleepover.

In the morning, he and I had our bikes out in the driveway and warming up by about 8:00 anticipating the 8:30 start.

By twenty after, Brad showed up, and immediately got dual-sport-wood for John's lovery orange machine.

Shortly after 8:30 Baron pulled in. We all gave him greif for being ten minutes late, but of course it was pretty damn dedicated of him to make it anywhere near that time since he had a 250 mile drive just to get to the start point.

I also harrassed him in the first post for using a trailor at the beginning of an ADVenture, but it's only because I know there's a bit of controversy around showing trailored starts to ADVenture rides. Some think it's a weak manuever; to you I say: DON'T BE AN . That's the stooptest thing I've ever heard!
How the heck do you think you get from your door to the beginning of the ride with the right kind of bike.

Once we all got our mounts under us, we took the quick 55 mile trip to Ennis to meet up with Paul at the Town Pump.

And it was there we first got to meet our mascot and leader for the trip, Hankenstein.

We topped off our tanks; loaded our tankbags wit granola bars and whatnot; and headed off into the chilly gray sky for the Gravely Range Road.

Hank
