How much life left in this rear tire? MEFO Explorer MFE99

I'm trying to decide if I need to replace this tire before the AK trip this summer. I didn't buy the tire new (came on the bike when I bought it last fall) so I don't really know how this compares with a new MEFO. While I realize tire life will vary based on wrist action and roads ridden, I was just curious if any of you could look at these pics and estimate the tire has 80% tread left or 50% or 30%...

Think this tire has 5000ish miles of mixed paved and dirt roads in Western Canada and Alaska left in it's life? Or should I just bite the bullet and buy new Heidenaus?

Bike is 2006 950 Adv...

That tire doesnt have 5000 miles of my riding (I dont ride too hard). At 5000, mine are 80% worn out ant at 6000 or so, need replacing.

If I wansnt too lazy, Id take a pic of mine with 2000 miles on them and they're prolly more worn than that.

Ditto here.

I have almost 5k miles on the scorps and they are 85% worn out.

So based on your numbers, if the tires in you pic have 5k (which i doubt, with all due respect) don't change them since you still have about 4k miles left on them.

I think you'll go through this tire (and maybe another one) before your trip to AK! The 950's eat rear tires for breakfast.

More like 500 miles on that tire...

I agree with what others have said. NO WAY that tire has 5,000 miles on it. I just went through a mefo myself and had about 3,500 on it. I could have gotten maybe another 500 miles give or take, maybe. However my bike was in for service and i figured it was a good time to swap the tires too.

I am now running the heidenau's. Only 300 on them so I can't comment on wear/life.

I will say that I have been getting about 3-4000 at best out of scorpions and now the mefo. I'm looking forward to seeing if the heid's last a bit longer.

My best guess is that the tire you have a photo of has about 55%-60% left, though just like gas tanks the second half always seems to go quicker. But there is just no way that tire has 5kmiles on it.

5000 miles

I would agree with you. It really depends on how much you and your gear weighs. Roads, the further north you get, get rougher and will eat a tire quicker than roads outside. You will need a tire before your trip is over.
I live in Denali and may have several k60's available this summer. For anyone interested please P.M. me

Mefo

If that tire has 5000 miles on it, I will eat it. I can't get 3500 out of one. I still run them, but I would hate to see 5K after me.Just saying.

I believe if you re-read his post, he is asking if the tire has 5K miles left in it. He didn't say it had been on for 5K miles . I get from 8K - 9K miles out of a rear Mefo Super Exp. Mine has been on for 5K and the groove in the center knobs is almost gone. I expect another 3K out of mine so I would say that yes, you could milk another 5k out of yours.

I'd say that tire is about 80% remaining. Unlikely to get another 5k out of it.

I've found the Heidenau's last longer. YMMV.

????!!!!

Not sure who is 'doing it wrong' but you are saying you are getting up to 9 thousand miles out of a rear Mefo? On a 990? If I got 1/2 of that I would be surprised, VERY surprised....

It's all a matter of how much you like to spin the rear. My Mefo was over half gone in 2 rides. Less than 1,000 miles, I was so bummed out at what I had done to a $160 tire than I put my street wheels on with Conti trail Attacks and have not put the Mefos back on in months.
