First 150 Miles on '13 XR650L
So I finally have some miles under my belt and Ive learned some things throughout it all. First off, damn this gas tank is TINY!. I went about 80 miles until I hit reserve
. Luckily, since the reserve is so large I made it to a gas station to fill up for 7$. Some other things I've noticed is the stock tires, they work surprisingly well on the street for being a 50/50 tire. They're a bit noisy but Im not complaining. Another thing I noticed is that the bike is definitely choked up, and a re-jet is going to be a must. I know about Un-corking and how it will totally change the XR but I dont have the $$ for that yet but for now, its been fun to ride. It's quick enough for my standards, not to loud, and the torque is nice. Im still in the break-in, and almost on my third tank of fuel and haven't burnt to much oil. Ive had to add a little but thats normal and hopefully will be ok soon. But I do have some questions. How often will I have to add oil after the break-in? How many miles is everyone lasting on the stock tank? Lastly, Is anyone from NJ?! |

1. I am from NJ, but escaped to DE as a child. I now live in MD.
2. I bought my 650 used with 1500miles on it. It came rejetted and with FMF exhaust and a clark 4gal tank. I put another 3000 hard off road miles on it before trading it for a plated xr 400. 3. Never burned any oil. I changed it every year or about 1000 miles. 4. It always ran flawlessly from day one. If it was real cold it would take some cranking to start but that was it. Never checked the valves or stuck a wrench on the motor other then air filter and oil changes. 5. Un corked and with the 4 gal tank I could get 80-90 miles before reserve riding hard off road. I would guess your mileage will go way down after rejetting and un corking. I bigger tank is a must. Great all around bike that is fully capable off road if you don't mind a little weight and a good work out. |

Go find the XRL650 thread in thumpers
![]() Average MPG is around 35 uncorked Amount of oil used seems to relate to how fast and how long, Trail riding will result in very little, 75mph commutes to work in the summer will be your most. I found synthetic oil uses the least and I try to stick with the heavier 20-50 weight oils in the summer. Just make sure you check your oil every fill up. well maybe every other fill up with the stock tank. Good luck with the bike you made a good choice. Them tires might feel good on the street but the off road reviews haven't done so well

Do First? Get an XRR650 front sprocket so you dont wear out the countershaft

Yea thats what I've heard too, I'm just going to wait until these tires are shot to buy new ones. And all these aftermarket tanks, do they have reserves?

Its narrower then the XRR Sprocket, and your countershaft will end up looking like this

Most of them use your stock petcock . I think one uses their own but Im not sure, If you ever run out of reserve lay bike down on left side. there is enough in the right side of the tank to get you a few more miles

How many teeth is the stock? I like the gearing, and should I buy the one from XRs only? The PBI one looks similar to what I saw in pics.

I think 15 is stock but dont remeber I like the 15 for most everything but if Im going to be doing all slow technical rriding I will drop it down to the 14.. get both the chain fits both. PBI is a good brand try some of the other online place and compare price

I had a one when they first came out in 1993. In the 20 years they've been out, nothings changed. Put on a Yoshimura slip on that seemed to help the power a little. The stock tank is a joke. I put on an IMS three gallon tank with stock petcock. Wasn't too impressed with the quality of the tank, but I had no problems. Put on a one tooth larger front sprocket that helped. The bike comes geared way too low. Only thing I didn't like about the bike was it being air cooled. I noticed a considerable loss of power when riding on slow trails in hot weather. An oil cooler might help.

Go with the bigger tank first. It won't be fun to do all the other mods if you can only go 80 miles!
