Given the no of people that attended, I would think that it'll be annual. But I guess that depends on the organisers. They may need to think about a different venue though. I think it was at capacity. I think they may have got more there than they anticipated.

It's bloody far away, isn't that on another island? Also, the only thing that has been polishing the rockers on my bike, have been rocks.

So are you hoping to have the PD running in time for next years show?

So I had a mission for this afternoon. Last week I went for a quick ride & remembered about the Old Whangamoa Rd. The Nads had done a ride there many years ago & I have a bit of a fascination for it.

It is the old road that winds around a bit then joins up with the highway up at the top just shy of the Whangamoa saddle. When they made a new striaght bit of higway to eliminate some of the windy bits they blocked it off. It was used as a hill climb venue years ago. You used to be able to race it 3 times to get your race licence to enter the Port Nelson st races.

Anyway I had forgotten where it was (well you can see it from the highway Duh! however you can access it from forestry roads under Mt Duppa. but went for a looksie. it didn't work out that well last week as I was aware noone knew where I was, had I fallen off so left after a bit of riding.

Today I went back out determined to find it again.

At first I explored up past the Mt duppa carpark. Unfortunately that drew 1 dead end & 1 totally over grown track. As the gorse invaded from the sides I had to ride along the middle hump hoping there ween't any gorries hidden amongst the grass.
Looking menacing

I ended up here

I turned back & went back down towards the main road. I turned off at a road with a no exit sign -it was easier & had seen more traffic. I realised later the no exit was for the road I had gone up previously.

I felt more confident along here & enjoyed the riding. It was pleasant under the canopy of the maturing pines.
When I saw on my GPS how close I was to the highway I got excited. Then coming around a corner I felt the coolness of the river & glimpsed some tarmac over the other side

Shortly after I came to the familiar mounds of dirt

Tank tracks! Three in fact!

Hmmm

Upon inspection I saw they weren't too bad. If I had a smaller, lighter bike they would have been passable. I err on the side of caution nowadays so walked over & here was the yellow brick rd.

You can see the start line of the old hill climb course.

I walked back to the bike & vowed I would return with a lite weight grubber &/or some other intrepid explorers to fufill the journey.

I did a few more side roads on the way out & saw some more promising rides

This is quite doable on big bikes so if anyone is keen to come with me next time & have a crack it'd be fun.

Last time i found that road it was by accident, but the tank tracks obviously weren't their (or maybe they were) as I came out by that bridge too.

Where do you go in? just opposite Hori bay turnoff or from the track by the passing lane just before the big hill before Rai. Both work.

keen to come up with you, but Sundays will require some notice for a few months.

You talking about the old Whanga rd or one of the forestry roads leading into the forest? There is a forestry rd Nelson side of the mt duppa proper turn off which looks a little overgrownish. Hippolite rd is the one with the tank traps at the end of it.
I do have a friend with all the forestry rds maps for GPS' I should really go see them & get them.

been thinking about the tinline again - might be tie to have a look up there too sometime. Good thing about getting older is forgetting the tracks makes it an exploratory adventure all over again
