Woke up this morning, jumped out of bed & announced I was going riding - all day- a long one.

Wrapped up all the usual tools & layered up. It was nippy & I reckoned on lots of snow where I was going.
Where was I going again? My usual favourite circuit - Nelson Lakes, porika track, Braeburn, lunch at Murch & maruia Saddle & return.

I knew it was going to be a good day when the guy at the Richmond servo let the lil old lady wait behind me while he cleaned my windscreen & chatted bikes

Got to the Lake with no worries. No ice/ grit or snow on the road.

There was bugger all snow really. I thought it may b down at the lakeshore after the last couple of days.

Headed down Howard Valley to the start of the Porika.

Ths pic was taken below a house on the bend. Nice view.

Here is the start of the track - this is such a lovely welcome

Along the gold fossicking area there is this loving memorial

I turned off the main track to follow the pylon access track

As I climbed I soon got to see snow.

The snow was dropping off the tree in clumps.

Some crazy looking trees

Schmidt was running fantastically. but of course it's not an adventure without a 5 min fix

Apologies for the crappy blurriness of the pics. These are super sharp on the laptop but after resizing & pbuckrting them they end up looking like crap.

Yes, he is pretty lucky to live in such a neat location. I spent the day changing the pushrod tube seals. Well, I still have to finish it tomorrow. My back ran out of patience.

Thanks gents.
jatz the Porika is pretty boney on the Rotoroa side but similar to pre slip days I reckon. The town side is quite wet with snow melt at the mo.
Like the Maunga it is prob the knarliest I'd take Schmidt on, as you can see form the exhaust pipe the old bike gets pretty shaken up. It has unbelievable tractor skills though - no wheelspinning just puts the power to the ground.
I don't know if i would personally take a new flash bike over there but that's just me

I would put up a map but I'm hopeless at that kind of stuff Volty.

If any of you Northern boys want to come down & have a ridearound for the weekend I have 2 bikes down here so you can fly & ride. Makes a cheaper trip.

What I omitted to add as I was so buggered last nite (& crook today) was that I can hear a distinct whining from the gearbox in 2/3/4th gear. I have researched & these are strightcut so may be the bearings on their wwway out. Luckily I have berlinas I can use & strip my one down for a looksie.

Oh the fun never ends with these. Funnily enough I was worried that it was running so well otherwise that something had to give

Funny, I was going to go for a quick spin over the Porika and back yesterday arvo myself. Below are the reasons for not going.
  • Started watching bathurst while having lunch.
  • Lost my spare tubes and mtb pump last weekend during the petrol/reserve debacle ride.
  • Mrs woodman had my phone in the car at her work.
Then you come along and post pics like that up.

I'm booked on the ferry shortly after Xmas - will you be around then? Be good to have a tour guide/local knowledge. The real question though, is will the bike be ready? ....

I lose stuff for no reason. Usually, I have kind people behind me, who pick up after me. But the other day, I forgot to zip up the damn tail bag again. That was the last I saw of my first-aid kit and my pressure gauge.

On the plus side, I've never had to use the first-aid stuff and it got wet so many time that it was probably stuffed anyway.

I lose stuff by being kind to people.
I dunno how many times I've fixed flats with my gas bottles and tubes and never see them again...

Come to think of it, Vege is the worst offender

Karma. Hopefully it comes back to you.

OTOH it is annoying if you are the only prepared rider in a group...
