A piston set with gaskets, a crank kit, crank bearings, case seals, etc, will run you more like 500+, IMO. If the crank is that worn, what else is ready to fail? Reeds? tranny? clutch? How about the suspension? I think you can get a much better deal buying a KDX in good condition for 7-800 - some at those prices are hardly used at all if you are patient. I see a lot of really nice E models (includes 1990) in that price range around in the west coast craigslists.

I had one, raced it in HS and did well on it. I actually quite liked the stock suspension and even did a bit of MX with no troubles. My dad has a 220 and I've borrowed it a few times and had no trouble playing on a mx track or in the sand at croom in south FL. Fantastic all around bikes.

I'd really not mind buying another current-gen 200 for trail riding.

VERY clean E series KDX. I has a 2001 200 and found it to be a very capable bike, and I kinda wish I still had it. I put stiffer fork springs in it and did a little mx and harescramble racing on it.

I put stiffer springs on mine too, but it was a few years ago and I don't remember the rate. I think I got them from Fredette Racing.

And spent a hell of a lot of money.

Yea, but what the heck? It was a lot of fun.

Would the kdx suffice as a good intro bike to getting off the beaten track?

TIA.

Garrett.
I agree with kawagumbi. Not worth it.

Nowadays most upgrade the front with KX USD forks.
