Split tanks

Pete,

Will there be a loss of capacity?

Unfortunately yes. Probably about 3-4 litres, but that becomes a much bigger tool box now.
Has anyone noticed the smell of fiberglass - and how it goes once youve used it for a while.

Couldn't you make them in two parts but still use the space in the middle, perhaps even attach them mechanically, rather than molding in one piece?

Yes - could do - but in the short term it'll be the storage space in the middle which is of benefit to the 990 guys with ABS.
Might still do a one piece - but not ATM. Just trying to get a product onto my bike before I make a few for friends

carbon fibre ?

hey pete, what would be the pros and cons of making the tanks out of CF ?

If luggage panniers can be made out of CF, i guess gas tanks could also be made ?

CF vs the world

Hi Vicks,

Yeah - Ive followed that thread - the process used is cold moulding in that instance. There are no problems making the tanks out of CF as it has exceptional strength vs diameter properties, 7 x stronger than steel IIRC per diameter. I make bashies out (and other fabrics as part of a total laminate) of it so its plenty tough when moulded correctly. What you have to ask yourself is why you'd want the CF on the tanks??? For blingness or performance??? As these will be painted im going down the stitched fabric + kevlar route for ease of manufacture, cost economy and impact resistance/flexability. CF for visual gratification is a PITA getting the fabric to lay neatly (in a vac infusion process) without disturbing the weave over complex curves. On a flat surface its no probs, such as in the outside flat where the race # goes.
Prepregs are another beast altogether and much better suited to "naked" applications. Some of the fairings and other complex parts that have been made for the SE by Powercell/Ken (I think) are simply put - brilliant. Im assuming he's using this method??

So pros - sexy, strength, impact resistance, sexy, light weight vs other fabrics, sexy, etc...

Cons - $$$$, neatness requirements if naked, handling issues, equipment, specially manufactured moulds (heat resistant).

This is a very limited take on my view of its preferred use. It can be used to make these tanks as part of an overall laminate but will I be using it in the immediate future - unlikely. Would it look good - no doubt. Will I have a CF set at some point - absolutely, but more as an excercise rather than a must have and they certainly wont be the 1st set out of the moulds. In the end it doesnt solve or reduce any problems associated with the manufacture process - so its a luxury IMO on a @200kg bike.

Did I mention I have moulds???

umm.. Pete, you lost me at around the 4th sentence mate

thats how much of a noob i am when it comes to composites and associated technology.

The reason i asked you is i thought that tanks made out of composites might be :
1. Lighter
2. Stronger (mounting points, impact/puncture resistance etc)
3. durable ??
4. did i mention they would be lighter ?

not for a moment did i think of the good looks angle.. i ride a big blue bike with an orange decal of an african tribesman for gawds sake !!!

cheers

PS : pics of the mould or it didn't happen ;-)

Sorry mate - thought you were after a tech version?

Simply put composites do allow freedom of shape in design which would be very hard to produce in the traditional manufacturing processes. And CF blingness.....

Just to give you an idea - i'll show you what happens to the part that I pull out of the mould. It was treated like royalty before it was moulded......

Calling Vicks....

K2m: Sorry for derouting this one, but did this work out well and what are the quote incl shipping...i have a lot of electronics to hide with this rc8r.

Oh Pete640, would the system be ready til christmas incl the bashy. Im in trouble sourcing a light bashplate for project 1190. Mountingpoints are weak(compared to old 950 version) and will only need to take gravel debris and so on.

Best regards to the creative ones.
Mikael
