Hey, redog1 -

I just learned that Hancock Pass is open again...

Have a great trip - looking forward to your ride report!

HAHA! I was going to use that "Rut Rogh" but I wasn't sure if anyone would get it.
I underestimated this crowd

"Rig Ruts!"

I'm having problems sleeping I'm so jacked. I really need to sleep so we can drive all night tommorrow night. Goal is to get to Las Vegas NM by Saturday late afternoon. Then the real trip begins.

You need some sleeping pills! Have you tried those little blue ones? They're great. Nytol and Unisom are the brand names, but they have generics, too. Look for Diphenhydramine

Hope you and lionsroaar have an awesome time - ride safe

(get off the computer and take a nap!)

I'm "working"
Tried different sleep aids, they make me feel hung over. Don't like them. Using Melatonin right now, helps but sometimes nothing works. I'll be ok and thanks for the input.
We will have a BLAST.

Day 7 continued...

Just a quick note about Gravitycheck. You're probably wondering why he hasn't signed in...
We left on good terms, I swear!

I thought maybe he forgot his ADV password, but it turns out that Trayce has some excellent reasons why he hasn't been stopping by.
I'm a little sad, since he's the main reason I'm even doing a ride report this year, but it just means I get to use all the goofy Gravitycheck photos I want
Some day he'll get to read this, and by then it will be too late...

So, Day 7 continued...

It got so freaking dusty, we started spacing ourselves further apart.
We took turns leapfrogging, taking photos and video of each other.
Here, Trayce waved us by so he could get video.

Oops - one more.
This was from earlier that morning (but I forgot to post it yesterday).
Tracyce was still learning how to shoot a video

Too bad we were so busy fooling around, we blew by the trail turnoff...

Norm said it was straight ahead, through this grass.
Trayce was skeptical, but it worked.

Love these pink wildflowers. I probably should save some of these 2up pics to use later in the report, when we no longer have a photographer.
I guess I'd better practice my CS2 skills (photoshop) so I can cut and paste us into the upcoming CDT backgrounds

Day 7 continued...

Pretty soon, we were in Seneca.

I wanted to see the bobcats, but they weren’t outside.

I know a lot of inmates like to stay here at the Lodge, but I was worried it would be too pricey.
Also, we only had 4 days with Trayce and the 3 of us just wanted to sit around and bullshit amongst ourselves.
We picked up some fud and some beer and split.

Stopped at a campground and filled up our dromedary bags, then continued on to Big Creek Campground (the woman at the store said it was much nicer the further out you go).
[I notice that link has some other (free) campgrounds in the area, too.]

It was nice. We were almost the only ones there (2 guys were on the other side of the CG).
I even found a huge pile of firewood that some previous campers had left. Score!

We didn’t need to fill our bags after all. There was water here.

We enjoyed this cool (but splashy) hand pump.

While Matt had ridden with Trayce quite a bit (Baja, 2007 KTM rally, etc...),
I had only met him a handful of times before this trip.
It was fun to sit around and chat and get to know him better.

Last night, while we were drinking and catching up, Matt and I had been telling Trayce about our trip so far.

He couldn’t believe how much snow and crap we had already gone through in the first few days.
"What in the hell are you guys doing?!"

Today, out of Matt’s earshot, Trayce told me, “Don’t worry, Kelly. That shit won’t happen now - I’ll be the voice of reason!”

(Here comes the Voice of Reason!)

The day had gone really well - smooth, relaxing and fun.
Maybe Trayce was breaking the spell of Stupid...

[guess that sucks for you guys...]

So, that's what hard bags are good for...

The campfire pics didn’t turn out very well, but here’s a pretty moon shot:

Hi Gale!
Actually, your link gave us a different song - "M.T.A"!

We were slightly confused at first, but I did a search and found this
link to "Desert Pete" .
That song is perfect! We enjoyed it.

Thanks so much!
kelly

I'm still enjoying this ride report and taking notes for my next adventure.
Try to stay out of the snow - Check
Two GPSs - Check
A real map - Check
Enjoy every second - Check

One of my friends had been quietly following this report (he doesn't like to clutter up peoples ride reports while I'm a bit of a clutterer) and he left on a dirt ride Wed. Last night I was able to talk with him on the phone for a few minutes and he was laughing as he told me about and ugly rock garden section he'd ridden in SE Oregon. He said he thought about this report and was telling himself "make rocks your favorite".

Adding to my list of notes:
Make XYZ your favorite - Check - I love it!

Big Wan can try all he wants but I don't think he has a chance of getting all the kids in romper room to behave, especially with LarryBoy in the group.

Waiting patiently - sort of - for more stories. This is just way too much fun.

Hiya Ladybug
Haha, that's great! Thanks for the giggles.

I'm glad the grumpy boss is helping someone else!
Laughing at the shitty parts makes them easier to get through.

Speaking of which, I think BigWan has given up on managing the nut house.
He probably realized that you guys need some recess time in order to get through this long ass report!

only 34 days to go....

Day 8: 7/14/10 Big Creek CG, OR to Sumpter, OR 155 miles

It got cold last night - 30F degrees or so. I love my cozy sleeping bag (Marmot Pinnacle, ladies regular ) and it only weighs 2.5 lbs!

Matt is not as enamored with his Big Agnes Encampment . I think he needs the down version ( 0 degree).
Anyone out there have the Storm King? Is it cozy?

Started off with a hot breakfast - duraznos con crema (peaches and cream) oatmeal.
We’ve had these packets sitting around forever (leftover from Mex).
I guess forever was too long. They were pretty clumpy and hard. Yum.

Before we left home, I had started making some little ADV mascot guys.
Some were like Coney, the safety cone, and others were just random.

I thought it would be fun to leave them along the trail, for other ADVers.
I ended up saving the majority for the TAT, but this morning I had Trayce pick one out.

Matt already knew which one Trayce would choose...

Hee! Perfect.

We didn’t want to go all the way back to Seneca to get on the trail, so Matt asked Norm to take us to the Frazier Point Lookout.

Norm picked some nice roads for us.

Cows! Good morning, ladies...

Here comes Gravitycheck...

Auuuggggh!

What? Cows don’t like gravity?

Now I thought I'd find some great link for "cows don't like gravity" but the best I could do was this .
I guess I don't do enough drugs to fully appreciate cow-anchulas

What a beautiful morning.

A little water crossing...

Ooh - it looks like we’re about to eat it here...
But, we didn’t. Just slipped a little on a rock.

Day 8 continued...

Here we are...

Here’s Frazier Lookout.
Wait..BigWan, they can’t see!

Okay, here’s Frazier Lookout.

Uh oh. What’s this?

Trayce was so excited about climbing the lookout, I don’t think he even saw the signs. “What, you guys aren’t coming up??”

Matt, at almost 300 lbs and with size 15 feet, decided that he exerts too much ground pressure to mess with that.
Me, I don’t do scary wood structures. Plus, I’m scared of heights. Sorry.

Don’t worry - here comes “the Voice of Reason!”

Oh, did I mention that Gravitycheck is an EMT?

Here’s Trayce’s contribution to “the Summer of Stupid.”

And, here’s what he saw from up there...

I know, who would have guessed? He saw a bunch of trees!
