Hi Gale! Oh, I know. Just like there are jerky KTM riders, too...
No, really - I've heard there are some!

I'm just venting and having some fun...

I know you would wave at us!

Day 8 continued...

Leaving Unity, we had one white-knuckle section of scary-deep base rock, but after that the roads were good.

Good road

Stopped up here for a group photo

Got directed down to some single track, but Trayce wasn’t feeling it...

Once again, the Voice of Reason prevailed and we went back to the good road.

Got to an OHV track.

Trayce wasn’t sure that he would fit! His wide load is about 45”

My biggest fear about these narrow OHV trails is running into a Yahoo coming from the opposite direction. POW!
But, it didn't happen today.
It was a fun, but short, section.
Then the track spit us out on the highway.

Sumpter, here we come!

It was just after 6:30 when we got to Sumpter and the gas pumps were already locked.
Shit!

Luckily, the folks there are really nice and they came out and unlocked one for us.

The woman at the gas station was talking about one of the new products they were stocking - some kind of drink called “FOUR loko.”

She and her friend decided to do a taste test...
Woo whee - not only did it get them hammered (12% alcohol), but the woman said it made them want to "chase bunnies!”

Intrigued, we bought a 24 oz can.

Sumpter had some interesting signage...

Um. I don’t think a hummingbird made that nest...
Oh. Wait... Is that the joke?

Nice assortment of bird houses.

LittleWan screwed with this post 09-07-2010 at 02:15 PM Reason: I just got the humming bird nest joke

Conversation last night:

Hubby: Did you watch the sheep video Little Wan posted?
Me: No, work blocks YouTube vidoes.
Hubby: Well you could watch it when you get home, here, watch it.
Me: *giggles at sheep*

Thanks for the scouting 411, and especially that one looks right up our alley (I wonder why they didn't name it the "Trans-Idaho Trail" like all the other ones modeled after the TAT -- you know, TWVT, TNJT, etc. )

Questor... guess who's coming to dinner and leaving the Drz's with you after Mobius 8 next fall?

Sorry, hijack over . I'll shut up and go back and work on my RR now.

Day 8 continued...

We had the option of free camping, but the spots we found were mostly sloping, dank, and thick with mosquitoes.
I sprung for the $6 campground - I thought it was worth having a table, a flat spot and a bathroom.

The guys seemed okay with it...

I tried to get caught up in my journal

I enjoyed peeking at larryboy’s journal, so here’s a glimpse of mine

Oh crap. Looking at my journal, I realize I completely skipped this part of today:

Riding together was getting so dusty, we sent Trayce on ahead.
A little while later, we saw a huge cloud of dust going up to the right and Matt laughed, "That must be Trayce..."
We followed it for a while, until Norman started to chrip that we were going the wrong way. We went back, confused.

Turns out that Trayce almost got taken out by a logging truck that had come barreling though the middle of the road!
The dust we had been following was from that truck.

It was a "gentle" reminder that no matter how empty these roads appear, you never know what's coming around the corner.

Whew. So glad we didn't lose Gravitycheck that afternoon!

Group shot

FOUR loko (fruit punch flavor). 12% alcohol.
It tastes like cough syrup.

Trayce was pretty into it

Then I noticed something on the label...It’s full of caffeine!
What the hell? That’s the last thing we want tonight.

After getting home, I did some research about FOUR loko.
Apparently, it’s so horrible, several communities are trying to have it banned.

Other bad news? It contains wormwood, one of the active ingredients of absinthe. And one can packs about 660 calories!

We finished off the beer and the guys tried to plan tomorrow’s route.
Roasted socks for dessert?

It was about this time when Trayce started hunting for his headlamp.
He was tearing through his luggage, checking all his bags...
“Dammit, where is that thing? I had it last night. I had it this morning.
I had it..Uh oh....”

And that’s when we realized that the headlamp had probably gone AWOL during this morning's ADV bike assplosion.

So, if you found a nice headlamp on the banks of the Malheur...
It was a little gift from The Voice of Reason

(hi TouringDave - thanks for stopping by!)

Hey Guys,
So, I've been trying to drag this out, hoping that Gravitycheck would have a chance to chime in...
But, it doesn't look like that will happen.

If we didn't get a phone call after that pink "censored" photo, there's no way he's even glancing at this report!

Anyway, I'll try and pick up the pace now.
I know it's killing BigWan with a long, slow death...

The last freaking installment of freaking Day 8!

Once the sun went down, it was DARK.
We heard a strange noise at the edge of the fire...
Oh my god! Zombies!!

But it was only a deer. Whew.

She’s pretty far away in this photo, but this doe had come walking through the campsite, all the way up to the edge of the fire.
Scared the crap out of us, too.

Matt wanted to do some of those ADV flashlight photos and this seemed like the perfect night for it...

Almost. Needs the oval...

Crap! So close...

Gah! This is the best one of the night. Needed just a split second longer...

Matt wanted to challenge himself - here’s a pic for Trayce’s son, Jayden.

Trayce’s happy face!

Haha, those flashlight pictures were hysterical.
We were laughing our asses off.

And then we realized it was 12:30 am...
It only felt like a few minutes, but we had spent HOURS on those photos.

So that’s what it’s like to chase bunnies...

Rocket Fuel Malt Liquor...Daamn!

hey Norman, long time no see - what say you?

Breaking News Update!
Oh my god, you guys!
I was going through my photos from Day 8 (one last time) and I found something really strange...

I have to go - I think I need to make a report!

Everything except riding!
I'm working on that...

Day 9: Sumpter, OR to Indian Lake Campground, OR 156 miles

Even after chasing bunnies last night, we got up an hour earlier than yesterday.
More clumpy oatmeal for BigWan and me, some astronaut food for trayce.

Matt uses his riding gloves as pot holders (everything serves 2 purposes on a bike)...

A quick group photo

We stopped in Granite to drop off our garbage.

Went to Olive Lake

It was so beautiful, we hung out for a while.

We walked down the wooden dock and relaxed in the warm sun.
Watched an osprey fishing and had some snacks and water.

It was such a nice lake, we didn’t want to leave.
They have camping here, but it was pretty crowded.

I ran to the bathroom and let these two have a nice moment on a bench.

Day 9 continued...

On our way to Desolation Butte, we had some rocky roads.
I guess I didn’t take pics, but my journal says, “big rocks.”
Maybe someone else has photos of that section?

I just have photos of nice roads...

Desolation Butte Lookout. Oh, like the sign says...

This lookout didn’t have any “no climb” warnings so we all headed up...

I don’t like heights, but it wasn’t too bad.
Haha, with our dorky neckerchiefs we look like we're in some kind of cowboy club
Sho' nuff!

Helllooo Trayce’s bike....

The view...

What is it, BigWan? Is Timmy in trouble?
damn it - how come there aren’t any good Lassie clips out there?

Oh, wait - This one actually works...

Gravitycheck loves the lookouts

But we'd better get back to riding!

Sure why not?
I've got a big yard, and a large basement.
We would love to have you all.

Dr. Rock. If you need a place to keep the DRZ's let me know, I'm sure we have a nice safe place for them in my garage.

Day 9 continued...

Lots of nice riding today

This meadow was so pretty, we stopped and goofed off.
Made a SUPER CHEESY video for you guys...

Gravitycheck was very insistent that he be Ponch. :ymca
So there you go.

Back on the road

Goin’ to Dale

That guy is Butch (No, not like that. I mean, everyone who came in knew his name, "Butch.")

I like the moai out back...

Butch had fuel, but not much for food.
Trayce stuck with his pre-made PB & J.
BigWan and I had bean and cheese burritos.

Behold! The bean and cheese burrito!

Matt freaked out. He said it looks like a diaper.
Gee, thanks, honey. Thank you very much. Nice.

Trayce likes to get comfy at lunchtime

Alright! I was hoping to pick up the new issue of Tractor House!

this building (next to Trayce's bike) houses the "ladies" room

So, the Dale gas station had one of the most disgusting bathrooms I’ve ever seen.
The mens room is out of order, so everyone just uses the ladies room.
There are no ladies in Dale, from what I could tell.

<---I know this is supposed to be "hiking LittleWan" but it also looks like it has to pee, doesn't it?
