I just sat down and read through your RR. It's F'ing AWSOME. Thanks! I'm a noob with a Beemer and you guys are an inspiration. I'll be sure to wave my cane when I ride buy . The only problem with RR's like this is they make me want to go ride in places like that when I have no skills at all. I still need to listen to until I get a little better.

One thing that is funny is that you husband BigWan looks just like a guy I went through the fire academy with. His name is Tim so they hung "Tiny" on him the first day. I swear he and BigWan could be brothers.

Anyway..... Great RR. Keep it coming, and if you guys ever get out Memphis way let me know and I will take you to meet Elvis and get some really good BBQ.

Hi Kelly and Matt!

Awesome ride report! I love the narrating and the pictures, I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard or was gripping my mouse with anticipation.

I am absolutely subscribed and I will follow your route to make notes on cool roads I should (or should not!) take.

That snow at the start of the report was trippy; I have never experienced anything like it. Wow, some of those roads you took are very difficult! Good thing you guys are alright in the end and made it safely back! (I know you haven't gotten to this part yet but I also found out that cracked ribs hurt... I got some on my RR when we did Black Bear Pass )

(BTW check out my RR in a couple hours I am working on an answer to your question with the help of our most powerful satellites!)

Oh, wait - This one actually works...

On a totally related subject (don't want to run afoul of the ModSquad ) is this tidbit about the first Timmy (the one in the video). The actor's name is Tommy Rettig and he was in the best movie ever.

BigWan will love it.

LittleWan? Maybe not. It's kinda macho.

Oh yeah, that CHIPS segment was so real, I almost called out Ponch's name as they flew by!!!

Hi Tn. Walrus (funny word picture!), thanks for the kind words . Oh, if I can just get a few BMWs to wave, then my work is done

Hi Oliver! Thank you again for doing those cool sat images - they really helped (in so many ways). I'm really sorry to hear you got hurt on Black Bear...

You guys, go look at EnderTheX's ride report for the most beautiful photos of Colorado passes! I wish our CO photos were that good. Also, we have to find out how Oliver hurt his ribs...

from the wiki link LW provided, explaining the Moai:

its Bart Simpson as an Easter Island moai

Hey Guys,
Oh, I was so busy yelling at Nixels, I forgot to thank him for the CHiPs love...
Thank you Nixels
Thanks larryboy!

Hi sion! Thanks for pulling up that Bart Moai - too funny!

Hi Ladybug oops, I forgot you ride a BMW. hope I didn't hurt your feelings either...
Maybe I should take the Beemer jabs out...
But, you know the type - those guys with the big, clean, chromey machines; wearing the black suits...too cool for school.
Too good to wave.
Ah, I'm leaving 'em in

Day 9 continued...

We followed the John Day River for a while

Then it was up into the hills for fun riding

Looking back at the road

I like these rocks

Rode through a section that had been burned at one point and was growing back super dense. It felt like a Christmas tree farm.

We had a really fun road to Tower Mountain Lookout. It was so fun, I forgot all about the camera! So, no pics til the lookout.

The Tower Mountain Lookout

This one was metal. More sturdy, but probably a little scary in lightning (see above).

This one feels a little high to me
Auuggghhhh!

This lookout had the nicest views, though.

Maybe they are afraid if they take their hand off the grip to wave they will upset the balance of their universe and get their big, clean, chromey machines dirty?

...just a wave from another BMW rider!!

I never considered that!

Could be, could be.
The Beemers I'm complaining about are more like Pirates (harley folk) than ADV riders. Lots of polishing and posing.

I'm not talking about you ADV FFs

hi, pyrate!

Nope, my feelings are just fine. I know exactly what you are talking about. I've gone to a couple BMW events and found myself feeling out of place. I forgot my chrome polish at home and my bike just wasn't shiny enough not to mention it's one of those wierd tiny GS things.

Yep, leave 'em in. If someone gets their nose out of joint about it that only means the desc. fits them.

I like that look out tower. I'm going to have to take a ride down there one day and check it out. Thanks for posting the pics of it.

Oh yeah, I better not forget to wave.

Day 9 continued...

On the way down from Tower Mtn Lookout, we had a close call with a Forestry Dept. truck. It’s a narrow road, and the truck took up the whole thing.
We scared the crap out of the poor guy.
Matt was trying to signal to tell the driver we had one more coming (Gravitycheck was behind us),
but then we were afraid that he misunderstood and thought we were giving him the ADV salute.

Matt turned around, the guy pulled over, and we chatted a bit.
Nice man. I was too shy to ask for a photo.

Once we were back with Trayce, we went by an interesting spot. I thought the sign said something about Rappel House.
Wait, I checked my notes again - I think it said “Rappel Base,” which makes way more sense (lousy handwriting).
I think it might have been these guys.

(I'm sure larryboy will know )

This must be the Danger Helicopter!

Hurry up! Close the damn gate.

We ran into some overgrown trails

Mud

and whoops

Hmmm. That whoop sequence was not as interesting as I thought it would be.
It was bigger than it looked.
(that's what she said!)

After this, I got tired of taking pics.
There were steeper whoops, squishy mud, rocks, ruts, rinse, repeat.

Trayce, scouting out the swampy, muddy trail ahead...

Oh yeah, just before the whooped out trail, we had another close call with a pickup.
A white truck came barreling at us on a gravel road - we scared him, too.
He went sliding by, death gripping the wheel, trying to maintain control.
He was all over the place!
It was horrible.

I’m just glad we never ran into trucks while we were riding Ponch and John style with Trayce.

evening, ladies...

After a while, we were out of the pretty grass. It was all arid, rocky dirt.
It was getting late in the day and we were tired. Trayce was running low on water (us too) and we all wanted to find a place to camp near a lake or stream.
It was not looking good, though - everything around us was hot, dry and bleak.

Trayce had noticed a place on the map called “Indian Lake” and we were trying to remain hopeful
(though at this point, we had the sneaking suspicion that this was going to be some sad, dried up old lake bed).

When I was riding down, I was starting to suspect that my routing was 'off'
ANd these pictures confirm it. When I came down, I hit a few common landmarks:
however I was never on a road other than a totally smooth FS road, or the occasional no road at all. So anyway, I'm dying to see your progression North so I can decide if I just need a complete do-over.

That place was TERRIBLE. Don't bother wasting these people's time with such a craphole. It's much better if they avoid it altogether.
