Day 23 concluded...

We were almost out of gas. Time to slab.

Last year, we blew past this weird stuff. This year, we stopped.

Hmm. Is it worth $10 just to take pics for the ride report?
nah.
sorry, guys. Anyway, you'll learn more about the Earthship from their website than you would have from me.

Or, you can buy your own!

It was still fun to look around.

Five minute promo video of Earthship marketing whatnot - here.

I dunno. This wall seems like it was built by pretty lazy hippies...

The guys on these wee stroms were taking the tour. We spoke to them briefly when they got out.
One guy was super excited to see our bike - he had never seen a 990 in person. Drink the orange kool aid...
I don’t think either one had ever been offroad, but when we told them where we had been, they sure were interested in the possibilities...

heh, crippling the planet, one guy at a time...

(just kidding! do I need to say it? It's a joke. Sheesh.)

I like the couch on the roof rack...

Yikes.

We had chinese again. It was pretty good.
We ate at Hunan last year, after a tweaker dude (a random guy that we stopped in the street) told us that every other restaurant in Taos had made him sick.

Matt liked this wrapper...he said it reminded him of me.

Norm.

P.S.“Make sand your favorite” didn’t work, huh? Sorry! At least I’ve got a moneyback guarantee on that... oh, wait.

Day 24: 7/30/10 Taos, NM to Trinidad, CO 120 miles

We started off the day with breakfast.

Then, it was highway time to Trinidad.

Notes from my journal...
“Slab drivers come in 2 flavors: semi-comatose and ‘get the f**k out of my way, my hair is on fire!’ God, I miss the dirt!”

While we were on Hwy 64 near Angel Fire, a red pickup with NM plates passed us and and the 5 cars in front of us.
Going uphill, around a curve (blind corner), crossing the double yellow...
There was no freaking way he could tell if there was oncoming traffic. It could have been a horrific accident.

Matt slowed down and we watched as the truck terrorized a bunch more cars; tailgating, then speeding in the wrong lane, around blind curves.
All I could think about was, what if we had been going the other direction?
You never know when you’re going to have the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I’m practicing my blurry maps for larryboy. If I zoom in so you can see the squiggly road better, then you can’t tell where it happened.
I tried to include at least one major NM town.

First stop? The friendliest KTM place we've ever been to: Valcom Motorsports.

Day 24 continued...

The folks at Valcom were as nice as ever. They remembered us from last year. Really? We're on a different bike this time.
The guys laughed. "Yeah, we don’t get a lot of 2up couples on the TAT."
(maybe that will change, eh? )

Orange and green

We bought some oil and parts and they told us to go ahead and use the shop out back (same as last year).

Here’s the bash plate we dented up in Oregon. Hmm. Photos just don't capture the dent-iness. Oh well.

BigWan gently persuaded it back into shape.

This is a time-saving oil change method matt picked up on ADV. I think from Crashmaster.
Muchas gracias, Accidente Maestro
!

All that dirt, especially after riding with Gravitycheck, makes a mess of the air filter.
Look at our yucky pre-filter!

Matt brought a new one from home.
It’s that Fez-looking thing on the left.

We squished up the old one and brought it home. It can be cleaned with solvent and reused.

The main air filter also needed replacing.

Unfortunately, Valcom didn’t have the air filter for a 990 (part# 61006015000 ). The one they had was for a 950 (part# 60006015000).

Side by side, you can see the holes are slightly off...

We used it anyway.
The holes are kind of stretchy and there was enough overlap so that Matt felt like it would be okay.
But, if you’re going to be doing the TAT on your 990 - call ahead and order the correct air filter!

There’s a motocross track next door to Valcom.
BigWan wanted to play with these guys so badly...(with all our luggage!)
Sigh.

He must have been channeling the Voice of Reason, ‘cause he only rode around the perimeter and didn’t actually enter the park.
Thank god.

LittleWan, you kick ass on writing a Ride Report that keeps on giving.

Sometimes I'm not all that happy about what's given

But you never disappoint!

I might just ride the TAT myself next year.

Thanks, it forced me to look at a map and see where Taos is in relation to Santa Fe where I jumped off the Divide. Sooooooo much of what I did is a complete blur..almost your mileage in half the time...I'm still tired.

I really liked NM, we might ride the street bike out there next summer. My wifes family were founding members of Silver City and we need to take her Grandma there eventually...she's in the closet in a box.

I know! He's totally kicking himself now, after watching that video ("I knew I should have done it!").
He does doubles at Carnegie OHV and it's fine, but here? At the start of the TAT?
Can you imagine how pissed I would have been if he had wrecked the bike, chasing some kids around a park??
Maybe next time...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again - You're an animal, Rob!

Day 24 concluded...

We stopped at Walmart to pick up a few things.
Matt made me take a photo of this Pinto stationwagon.
You never see these things anymore, unless they’re going to blow one up on a TV show.

This was new since last year.
I believe it’s “The Coal Miner’s Canary” and was dedicated on June 4, 2010.
Colorado has a long history of coal mining, and the canary is across from a memorial recognizing Southern CO miners.

Close up of the canary, here on the wiki page.

I learned all kinds of stuff from the internets - did you know that Trinidad, Colorado
is known as “The Sex Change Capital of the World?”
Note to self: Do NOT tell people that you’re “taking a trip to Trinidad.”

We got a room at the Trail’s End Motel.

It had been raining on and off all day, but that night it just dumped.
Thunder and lightning, too. I couldn’t even take a shower.

Instead, I went online (apparently also unsafe) and got even more freaked out about lighnting.
I thought about larryboy a lot, too.

Meanwhile, matt was watching all the bad news on television.
There were flash flood warnings for Trinidad, Salida, and most of Colorado and Utah.

Awesome.

That was a short, fast day.

hey, that reminds me - if you’re in the market for a PN-60 (like Norm). They are on sale at REI! $290 is an amazing price!
What a bargain!

Xymo! Do you hear that? I think one's calling your name...
Oh, it's Norma, your new girlfriend!

you're killin me!

I 'kind of' have $300 right now... BUT I still haven't figured out the stutter in my bike AND I found some metal in the oil.

I did have some questions regarding norm though: Could you have done this trip using just norm and no netbook?

LittleWan ; Have been following along on this RR (read all your others too) . You write a great ride report ! Tell BigWan that being able to pilot that loaded school bus two up on those "roads' impresses this old rider very much ! And you are a very good "kid on that bus" also . Keep up the great work , thanks for all your effort . "Make LittleWan's ride reports my favorite" .

Nice report. I get caught up reading the adventures of the Wans every time.

For future reference, here is a guide to naming subdivisions in Colorado. You can't go wrong, just
randomly select one word from each column.
