I just caught myself calling my new PN-60 "NORM" ... Sorry LW

Colorado is an absolutely stunning part of this country. I hope one day to ride those roads. You guys are lucky.

Oh, go ahead - we donít mind. Hope you and Norm jr. are very happy together.
P.S. You owe it to yourself to get out to Colorado some day...it's worth it!

Day 28 concluded...

Heading into Lake City.

So, apparently Silverton had been booked solid for weeks, and most of Lake City was full, too.
We didnít try anywhere else, we just went back to the Silver Spur Motel.

They gave us the same room (#6).
Oh look, I finally remembered to take a picture of a motel room,
before the Wan Bomb went off and gear exploded everywhere!

This is probably the only place that has a crappier television than the one we have at home.*

* Okay, thatís not really true anymore. Just last month, BigWan treated himself to a new TV. For the first time, we have one thatís cable ready (but we still donít have cable ).

I forgot to mention it earlier, but when we were in the Uncompahgre Forest, we went through the biggest cow pie, EVER.
(donít worry, that link is not what you think itís going to be, but it will still make you sick )

The pie completely blew up and got cow poop everywhere - it was so nasty.
The bike, our boots, our pants...even my gloves!...were just covered.

I wanted to take photos, but Matt refused. He was so disgusted, he didnít want any reminders of the experience.
I guess I must have listened because I just went through our photos and I donít have a single shot of the bike OR of either one of us in our gear.

Anyway, the folks at the Silver Spur let us hose down the bike (and ourselves) out front.

It was plenty early, so we walked around town for a while.
What is this thing?
It looks like Dumbo the elephant and a seagull had a baby.

Safety Third!

Bustling downtown Lake City!

Weíll be back here again...

Right about here, we saw a guy on a XR650L with a TransAmerica Trail sticker.

Excited, we stopped and talked to him. Turns out heís not on the trail, he bought the bike from a guy ďwho thought about riding the TAT.Ē
Oh.

The guy trailered the bike out from Indiana with some friends and they were spending a few days in the area.

Indiana admitted that he was actually waiting for the police.
He had accidentally broken into the bank and set off the alarm!

He was trying to get change and the door was unlocked, so he walked in.
While he tried to find someone to break a fifty (or whatever), he set off the motion detector and the alarm was going crazy.
Freaked out, Indiana was waiting around to explain that heís not a bank robber.

In a few minutes, the sheriff came by. He went inside the bank and looked around.
As the sheriff was walking out, Indiana went up and explained what happened.
The sheriff was confused at first, and said, ďNo, I think the wind blew the door open, again

Anyway, it all got straightened out and Indiana was fine.
haha, it must be fun to live in Mayberry!

I donít even walk in our neighborhood any more, there are too many homeless people, halfway house "residents" and muggings.

Back at the San Juan Soda Co.

The mint chip is really good.

oh, we spaced and forgot to turn Norm off.
We got to Lake City at 2:30 and he sat around in the tank bag, twiddling his thumbs for 3 and a half hours...
So, subtract 3.5 from the ďstopped timeĒ - 1:10 stopped.

Hi SlowRide13/Pete! haha, matt's pretty proud, I think.
Thanks for stopping by!

Day 29: 8/4/10 Lake City, CO to Moab, UT 223 miles

Today was a big day! We were going to hit a bunch of passes, including Cinnamon, California, Corkscrew, and Black Bear.
Then, through the La Sal mountains into Moab.

I have way too many photos, but this was one of the best days of the trip!

Loosey goosey map, just to give you an idea of whatís happening.
Starting in Lake City, ending in Moab.

I wish every gas station had one of these fishes.

Hey, FYYFF! This is Victor, a.k.a. MN Yeti, a.k.a. the infamous Victor Burger.
He and his buddies were working on the 2nd leg of the TAT (they did the first part last year).
Victor is a journalist, publisher of Minnesota Motorcycle Monthly.
Cool, huh?

This is our lucky gas station. Last year, we met themansfield here!

BigWan and I were heading to Poker Alice for breakfast, as was Victor.
Okay, here I have a confession. I hate crowded places.
A room full of strangers makes me want to turn and run.
Even a room full of people I know makes me want to turn and run.

Poker Alice was packed. Matt sent me to the back room to find a table.
I wanted one so I could hide underneath it.

Victorís friends were there, but I was so nervous, I didnít really make eye contact or anything.
I was just trying to hold it together and appear normal until Matt came back.
So, you Minnesota fellas - Iím really sorry I seemed like such a cold fish.
I wanted to be friendly, Iím just scared of new people.

Once BigWan was chatting with them, it was easier to warm up.
The boys from MN were a funny, raucous bunch and we enjoyed eating with them.
We heard that they were doing Cinnamon Pass today and we were secretly hoping to tag along.

Unfortunately, two of the group, Kevin and Sev, were nursing injuries (a sprained ankle and a dislocated finger - ouch!)
and would be taking the highway to Moab.

Kevin and Victor

First, BigWan wanted to stop at the Polaris dealer at the end of town to see if we could find a radiator cap. The bike was still losing coolant.
Either the water pump was bad or the radiator cap was.
We were hoping for radiator cap.
The polaris guy was jerk.
His attitude was, if you arenít renting something, get lost.
Whatever.

We went back to see if Victor and the guys were still around. Nope.
Uh oh.
That means BigWan had a rabbit to chase.

Oh boy, Cinnamon Pass!

Last year it was rainy. This year - it was perfect.

BigWan said, ďI smell a wabbit!Ē

Oh, crap.

5,000 of them are mine. I'm pretty sure there are only 5 or 6 people following this thing, so relax- let it all hang out!

So, did you have this song going through your head as you went up and over Cinnamon Pass?

Day 29 continued...

So, we were on a wabbit hunt.

Hey, guys! We had caught up with Paul, Marty, Victor and Gus (not pictured).

Thereís Gus, on the far right.

Mmmmm...Orange.
(admiring Paulís KTM 530exc)
(is that right? 530exc?)

(hey wachs, it looks like these guys dig Giant Loop!)

We marveled at the scenery for a little bit, had some chit chat, and then BigWan and I pretty much invited ourselves to ride with the guys.
Just as we had done with themansfield, PaulyNY and Julian.
I think they were okay with it...

BigWan and I had been lonely, so it was fun to have someone to ride with.

I was excited to have riders to photograph, too!

Hey, Gus...

Hey, Paul...
Edit to add: I just remembered - while BigWan was trying to pass Paul, a big stick shot up off the road and got wedged between the shifter and the case.
It was a mess and Matt couldn't shift out of whatever gear he was in. I remember Paul looking over like, "WTF??"
Haha, sorry Paul - we weren't trying to kill you!

Hey, Victor and Marty...

We stopped here to see if the guys were interested in checking out American Basin.
Last year, BigWan and I had made a wrong turn and we ended up in AB.
It was beautiful.

The guys opted to continue on the TAT, so we said we would catch up to them later.
Okay, boys, hereís what you missed...

Last time it had been cloudy and overcast, so we were lucky to have sun today.

We had a little watercrossing there and back.
Here it is on the way back to the turnoff.
That truck had been on his way into the basin.
After scouting it out, he thought it was too deep and left.
Aww, you probably could have made it!

The wife wouldn't go for a lobotomy, huh? Sorry.
Um. What is that thing (emoticon) doing? Huffing? Maybe drinking FourLoko?

Day 29 continued...

Back on the trail to Cinnamon Pass.

Looking back at the trail. I think that's Gus on the side of the road down there...

Here we are - at Cinnamon Pass!

Thanks, Gus!

Paul, really making those greens pop...

They must have been enjoying some Sven and Ole jokes...

Hey, Gus - I hope you donít mind but I swiped this off your smugmug account.
Victor sent me the link back in August and I just remembered this morning...
(I took the ďyeti interestsĒ one, too).
