Hi blueproof!

Day 34: 8/9/10 Near Chimney Rock, NV to Battle Mountain, NV 293 miles

It was a beautiful morning.
Coffee and oatmeal for breakfast and then we were on the road.

Oh, look, more sign photos.
That’s confusing - Hwy 93 is to the left AND to the right...

I’m pretty sure we went towards Lone Pine Summit/Lund.

Yep.

So pretty. Sigh. And we had these roads all to ourselves.

Isn't this gorgeous? The dirt was just perfect, too.

It was a great morning for wildlife.
Bunnies...

These guys. Deer? or Elk.

And chipmunks.
I don’t have any photos, but they kept running out in front of us.
After we had killed that one in Colorado, it was stressing me out.

me: I wish they would stop running around like...hmm. Like...
matt: like chipmunks? I wish I knew a chipmunk song.
me: (singing) Christmas, christmas time is near...
matt: how the hell do you know that song?!

hee hee. my grandparents had that album.
Just leave that playing. What a catchy tune!
I think I sang that song for matt every morning for the rest of the trip.
He wanted to strangle me.

Me, I want a hula hoop!

Please Christmas, don't be laaaate!

Hi LW
I have been busy reading, and am now caught up on your awesome RR!
Thanks for taking the time on the PM- I really appreciate the advice- can't wait to make 2-up dirt my favorite! Hopefully we'll get a few more nice days before the snow and cold hit

Hi LisaS - you’re welcome! hope it helps.
Hey Treewakr, thanks for checking in!
Thanks, Gary - glad you’re still enjoying the RR.

Day 34 continued...

More nice curvy dirt.

Saw lots more chipmunks, but I will spare you the song...
Did it get stuck in your head? I was humming it all day.

I always associate Nevada with endless desert 2 track, but parts of it are full of trees and mountains.

And rocks.

I didn't remember all of these rocks. They were pretty neat to ride through and it was a fun section.

Our headlight burned out, so we headed to Ely to get a new bulb.
Saw a bunch of these signs while we were in NV.
I don't know anything about the man, but can you think of a
politician who ISN'T a butt?
(hairy or not)

Stopped at McDs for another cup of coffee and a look at the map (AAA Nevada map)
The only outlet was in the kiddie area, of course.

While matt replaced the headlight bulb,
I got caught up in my journal and watched the kids play in the habitrail.
I guess kids are okay, but they aren't half as cute as hamsters.
haha, I'll bet you never imagined you'd be watching that on ADV rider.

I tried to find a clip of the giant habitrail in Garden State, but there wasn’t a good one.
Here’s a screen capture. That habitrail (on the right side of the photo) takes up most of that room and snakes through the house.

And, we’re back on the road.

Day 34 continued...

Into the Humboldt Forest (which makes me think of Redwood trees and burnouts.)

Off to visit Hamilton.
I’m not sure if we were on the TAT at this point...

The roads were so nice, I want to say that we weren’t (on the TAT).

Here’s a map.
The red thing is Hamilton and Ely is on the far right.
We're in the middle somewhere...

Lush and green - not what comes to mind when you think “Nevada.”

Another spectacular day!

woo hoo!

This truck has been in a ton of ride reports. TAT celebrity!

Aww, thanks Questor (and craftycoder)!

Y'know, when I wrote, "Chuffing," I thought that it sounded kind of bad. Like huffing.
But, looking at the urban dictionary (I'm not linking it, but go see for yourself), I see that I have
made a huge mistake!
Probably giving the limeys quite a chuckle, though!

Let's stick to GLORP.

Hey guys!

Okay, let's just pretend that the whole bit that rhymes with "stuffing" never happened...

ahem.
Day 34 continued...

So, we’re going to Hamilton, NV. Just seeing if you’re paying attention!

Here’s info about Hamilton, the ghost town, for you studious types.

(did you know that the super-tan douchebag, George Hamilton, played Evel Knievel? I didn’t. I’m “learning” so much useless stuff while doing this ride report! )

We rode up the hill and looked at some ruins we hadn’t seen before.

It seemed like a nice place to stop for some snacks.

me: (holding up the water bottle) can I interest you in some hot inner tube water?
matt: Mmmm...I do love sucking on inner tubes.
matt: (holding up the beef jerky) can I interest you in some tasty shoe leather?
me: Mmmm...I do love chewing on shoes...

haha, do we know how to live, or what?

Looking down at the town.

We were sad to see that some of the ruins were more, well, ruined this year.

2009

2010

While I was looking at my photos, I realized that I didn’t see this one either.
The square building is there, but not the cactus-looking part.
According to that Ghost Town page, these were the ruins of the J.P. Withington Hotel.
“The most expensive structure built in Nevada up to that time.”

2009

Doesn’t this look like the square building? But with no cactus-thingy.

While I was googling that stuff about Hamilton, a ride report came up (I guess it's not really a ride report - it's a tour promo):
Fellow inmate, Stuntman, sure loves his ghost towns!
Wow, that's a lot of historical information. Dates! Historical figures!
Go read it and come back...(I can't give you any history here)
So much work and research went into that segment. Not like some people we know...

Just trying to gather a couple actual facts for this post made me lose my driver’s license number and most of my passwords.
My brain hurts!

Here, this might help...

Ahh. that's better.
