Don't worry about the chipmunks

Ely, Nevada = considered the best Mountain Lion hunting area in North America.

BTW - Great Ride Report. And I think most know how much work you have put into this RR and it's appreciated.

Hi LewisNClark.
Um. I like chipmunks.
I like mountain lions, too.

But, I'm glad you're enjoying the RR.

Hey nevermind!
and, Slowride, I'll just take that as a compliment.

Day 34 continued...

zoom! I always snap photos of signs, even if they are useless to us.

I just can’t get over how pretty Nevada was this time.

Even if it starts to look the same...

We spent some time with our friend, John, and his kids this summer.
The boys discovered that, with certain words, they can swear and not get in trouble.

BUTT-terfly.
ASS-phalt.
DICK-tator. (okay, I made that one up myself. Kids don’t say “dictator.”)

Anyway. Enjoy some fresh asphalt.

I like this one.

haha!
hi blueproof!
Me, I want a hula hoop...

Hi DantesDame!
I hope you don't get in trouble, now that you've been outed and there's proof (blueproof?) that you've shown your face in the asylum...

Day 34 continued...

Would you like another useless map?
okey dokey.

So, originally, we only planned to get as far as the “5 miles of sand and singletrack” on the TAT roll charts, and then head home.
(What larryboy calls “the narrows.”)
Then, we said we’d go as far as the Sheldon Wildlife Refuge, then go home.

Eventually, we said, “F**k it, let’s just finish the TAT and go all the way to Port Orford again.”
(oh, should I not swear, now that I know the mods are looking?)

But we weren’t really prepared.
Even on this section, around Ely/Hamilton/Eureka/BattleMountain...
we didn’t have our roll charts or TAT maps.
Just a AAA map of Nevada. and what we had loaded into Norm.
We were supposed to hit more two track on the way to Eureka.
BigWan thought he saw the turnoff,
but we weren’t positive.
and neither one of us was in the mood to get lost, so we kept going.
(sorry, larryboy. I know you love that two track).

They were doing some roadwork in Eureka.

Lunchtime.

Last time, we tried to get fancy and it cost us.
Keep it simple, stupid. Burgers and fries.
Hard to fu.. mess that up.

As we were getting ready to pay, I noticed something on this bill...

Once we got home, I checked it out.
Here’s a screen capture of this bill’s history, so far.

Moderately interesting, huh?
Meh.

Yeah, it could have been better.
I had high hopes! Oh well.

Eureka loves Dustin.

Opera House.

Sorry, I blew my history wad in Hamilton.

Don’t worry, google is your friend!

So, we got fuel at the Chevron Station.

While we were waiting, BigWan tried to call his mom.
Our stupid, piece of shit crap phone couldn’t get reception.
No freaking bars!

As we were pulling out of the gas station driveway,
Matt looked down and said, “Hey, someone lost their cell phone..”

He reached down and picked it up (without dropping the bike!)
and we pulled over.

“I wonder if they have reception... Full bars! #$%(*&^$!”

There was no listing for “home,” or any obvious way of getting ahold of the owner.

So, BigWan called his mom.

He gave her a quick update and asked for the info on her caller ID.

It was a 775 area code.
Looking at the billboard across the street (for a local realtor), we saw that the Eureka area code was 775.
Oh, good, a local!
(since then, we’ve learned that the 775 area is huge! )

Matt scrolled down the contacts until he found a listing for “DAD.”

ring ring...
man: hello?
matt: hi, I found this phone and you’re listed as “Dad...”
man: (laughing) oh, really?
matt: what’s the best way to get this phone back to its owner?
man: where are you?
matt: I’m next to the Chevon Station in Eureka, Nevada.
man: Perfect. I own that station. You can just leave it in the office!

haha! What a lucky kid.
And we only called California, not Argentina.
Extra lucky!

If you can't swear on a motorcycle forum, where can you swear?
but, yeah, it's a terrible habit.
It's the worst on a ride, though. So it kinda belongs in a RIDE report...

Hey LB - yeah, do you have a lousy phone, too? Ours didn't work on the OBCDR either.

Hi gldfamily! Oh, do you ride at PiPi? Lucky
The ride report has to end soon. It's screwing up every other aspect of my life!

Day 34 continued...

We knew to bypass the first section of the TAT after Eureka.
The mining area is closed and the road Sam wants you to go on has long been fenced off.
We wasted a lot of time doing that BS last year.

I was a little nervous about the Eureka to Battle Mountain stretch.
Not only was that where we crashed in the mud last year,
but later we found out that our friend Julian had wrecked in the two track and ended up in a concussive state.
Yikes.

Still, when we got back on the road on the way out of Eureka,
it was a huge disappointment when Matt couldn’t find the tracks in the GPS.
We thought that they were loaded into Norman, but now they were nowhere to be found.
Norm must have eaten them!

that guy has free clipart cartoons on his website. it actually looks like norm, doesn’t it?

So, now what?
They might be in Frankenslime, but he was packed away at the bottom of the duffle.

Screw it.
Sam had had his chance to kill us last year,
This time it was Norm’s turn.

We started off by having Norm route us to the ghost town of Cortez.
It seemed remote enough to get us on some dirt.

So amazingly green for Nevada...

Hey, buddy...

Hey, hay...

Oh, look!
We’re back on the TAT! I guess there aren't many choices for roads out here.
Crap, every time we see this sign, it has either just dumped, or is about to dump.

Okay, I have too much work to do today - not sure when I'll be able to post the rest.
Maybe tonight?

I dunno, I kind of like a cell phone that doesn't work.

Take the rest of the day off.

Hey LB, hey Q.

This is almost like taking the day off.

Have some Nevada road photos...

Day 34 continued...

These roads were fast and fun.

We just had to keep an eye on the clouds.

We had a few distractions...

Cute little bambi

Cows.

And, then it was back to the open road.

Haha, Aussie drag queens not your thing?

here's another "open road" clip.

more NV roads and the usual bs tomorrow...
