was wondering what was up with the wan's...wow, 2 up across the pond on a boat
...sounds like another epic fun adventure for the memory books. You two will be rock'en and roll'en in land mode for at least a couple weeks. Wife and I enjoyed a 2wk love boat cruise last Jan from LA to Hawaii and back. I know it's not anything close to your adv but it's still way cool, and a little scary, to be many days from land in any direction. Couldn't imagine those seas in a boat less than 900ft. Love that Hawaiian .

Hi!
Wow, I'm rusty - couldn't remember how to do anything (youtube, photobucket, linkies, etc.). Okay, first things first - Ahoy, larryboy! You confused me on that one, but google is my friend. Haha! Okay, “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” by, littlewan (I hope I don’t get yelled at for this, you guys) So, some of you actually like sailing, huh? It’s not my favorite, but I’m getting used to it. I like the other good stuff that comes with it. Like dolphins... Ooh, TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN for that one - the wind noise is pretty loud (didn’t notice it earlier, sorry). I’ll try and make this brief, but basically we sailed from Mexico to Hawaii then went from Hawaii to San Francisco. We were in the sea of cortez, got supplies in La Paz, and then left from Los Frailes (near Cabo). Look, I figured out a way to get a moto into this post! RIDE CONTENT! ![]() That pic is from our Baja ride in 2007. We were on that road that goes from Mission San Luis Gonzaga to San Evaristo (and then continues along the coast to La Paz). If you look behind me, out in the water, you can see a little island... That's Isla San Francisco. And here's us, anchored in the South end of the island... (we're in the shallow water, closest boat to the bottom of the frame) You can see the Baja peninsula in the background. ![]() So, if you’ve ever ridden to San Evaristo, now you know what’s out there! I don’t want this to be too boring, and we really didn’t take many pics, so here are some random photos: ![]() Med moored at Radio Bay (Hilo, on the big island) ![]() ![]() tied to a mooring ball in Lahaina, Maui ![]() BigWan loves the frozen treats! ![]() waterfall on the road to Hana ![]() Haleakala Crater (maui) ![]() Did some diving/snorkeling. I love these guys - spotted sharpnose puffer fish so cute! ![]() The sea turtles in Hawaii were awesome. We were really lucky and got some good pics. ![]() Matt got some video, too. We made one for our Moms, so the music isn’t quite what you’re used to from us ( ), but if you want to see it, here’s the linkie: honu Makua Valley, Oahu ![]() Haven’t seen the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but we heard it was filmed in Kauai. Maybe this will look familiar Tunnels Beach, Kauai ![]() There’s not a lot to take photos of in the middle of the ocean. We have a bunch of sunrise pics, here are a couple pretty ones (do these look familar, dvwalker?? Bet you saw some from the Love Boat) ![]() ![]() And, for the 5 of you who can manage to watch a video of sailing, here’s a little one. I’m waving from the cockpit at about 2:10 Again, turn the volume down (wind noise)... So that’s it! It took 20 days to go from Mex to Hawaii, then about 19 days to get from Hawaii to San Francisco. Not too bad for a 34’ boat. I think in milage, it was roughly 3000 miles out to Hawaii and a little less to get home (maybe 2600 from Kauai to SF? haven’t added it up yet). We did have the pleasure of sailing an extra 1000 miles for nothing - when we first left Kauai, we were racing to leave before some rough weather was forecast. Sailed our asses off and made great time. Then, at 2am on our 4th day out, the forestay broke (a crucial part of the boat’s rigging). The jib furler came crashing down onto the deck and we had a fun time trying to get it back on board. Instead of trying to continue on (maybe losing the whole rig), we decided to turn around and sail back to Kauai. Right into the bad weather we had tried to avoid! It was over 450 miles of hell. Waves were breaking OVER the boat, we were slamming around inside, and it was pretty scary - 4 days of wishing I was any place else. Wheee! I’m a sailor! I’m sailing! ![]() Anyway, we fixed everything and things went fine the second time we left, but I could have done without the extra milage. We got to do the worst part of the passage, 3 times! Our biggest weather was off the California coast - from Cape Mendocino, down. 35+ knots of wind, 15 ft seas... We hit 14 knots, with just a double-reefed main (no jib!) So, we’re glad to be home. THE END. Hope that wasn’t too long and boring. Mods, don’t worry - that’s it from me! I forgot how much time these posts take... Oh, and haha, when Matt went to check on the 990, he found a little mouse living in the glove box! How do you know it’s been too long since you’ve ridden? When there’s varmits in your bike! ![]() I shall leave you with a parting gift - This song was popular on all of the islands and it got stuck in our heads. Stupid, but very catchy... You'll be humming that one for a while... You're welcome! Thanks for reading this you guys. ![]() See ya! |

Is it a Seawind Catamaran? If so, I've always liked those boats!!
Make broken forestays your favorite! ![]() If it makes you feel any better, I had to re-run a main halyard while rounding Cape Horn when I was 14 w/ my grandparents!!
