You should pop your head up more often Tony. Had beers at my place tonight and your bike came up. Matt who organised the WAR ride saw you going through upper hutt the other day and had never seen it before. You could have come along tonight.

Hey Steve, you’re running a UNI air filter right? Do you have a part number?

Here's where I got mine from. It's the same as the US one, but not the same as the Aus one. Appears to be part no NU 7303.

Apparently the Aus crowd will make a filter up for you (special order) if you send them your old paper filter exterior. That seemed like too much hassle to me. It has been suggested that you could make one up easily enough the same way. The filter material is relatively easy to get hold of.

I use 'No Toil' filter oil & cleaner on it.

The filter is not quite as good as dirt bike filters, which wrap around a cage, because its glued onto the 'cage', but its better than paying out for paper filters. The 'cage' is rubber with a coarse aluminium screen at the base. It uses the standard filter housing, & runs at approx the same jetting. It isn't as exposed as the 'race' filter that Moorespeed uses (hate to get that wet, or dusty).

I'll be interested to see what mine looks like when I take it out shortly - given it was clean before the WAR ride.

Sorting the Forks

I've had a stiction issue on the forks, which meant that while the forks dealt with bigger hits really well, small irregularities in the road were fed back to the rider. This was especially annoying on the road. I waited for a while after the rebuild to see if this was caused by the new bushes & seals I had put in, but the situation hadn't improved significantly.

As a first step I removed the sealsavers, & dropped the fork oil from 5w to 2.5w (standard for the 48mm KYB forks). Intuitively this felt too light, but 'needs must'. The fork action off the bike was smooth, but felt underdamped.

When I putting the forks back on the bike, I noticed the stiction was back. After investigation, I discovered the cause was the axle. This was flared at the non threaded end - I had assumed deliberately by Yamaha. But no, this is another example of work of the hamfisted prior owner. After I carefully ground this flare off, the axle slide 2mm further into the forks, & the stiction issue was resolved. Result!

BTW Andy Mac, found that 6mm tap...
