Northern Michigan Dual sporting

Ok, here is my first ride report....be gentle. Not the globe blazing adventures I have read here, but simple fun backroad exploring.

Not long ago I picked up a 97 DR350SE. I had been riding it around the local dirt roads in lower Michigan for about 1000miles....this would be the first real test "off road"

Another inmate rideing a DR650 and I had a rough plan to knock out 300+ miles of Northern Michigans finest unimproved roads. The night before it rained a lot. I mean a real lot. Like gather animals two by two and such.....

Base camp Mancelona, Mi. A quick oil change on the 650 before leaving.

8:30am Then a quick ride into town for fuel and breakfast

Grub!

Headed south on trails like this.

Found a few puddles

And some trails that didn't look like they had been riden much lately...

12:00 noon. Lunch was some oil and a Red Bull, also an exhaust leak on my bike..

Heading to Grayling...no check that into Grayling. Loose header bolts 70miles covered so far.

...more puddles south of Grayling

Just before leaving I think I mentioned that I had a hard time seeing my buddies tail light...

Allright enough dinking around...South east towards Luzerne, MI

Directional check.

Tread lightly....this little guy should have zigged...we zagged and both hit him

Exploring

Slabbin it...I need to change the gearing on the 350...65mph = 6500rpm...

Watch your mirrors....

Ok then around 2pm just south of Lewiston, MI we stopped for ice cream and fuel. sorry no photo. Then things got interesting. We both started hearing noises from our bikes, I though we got bad gas...??? not real sure we took it easy for a bit till this

lucked out..minimal case damage...no oil leaks.

158 miles so far....stock chain with about 6500 miles on it.. FUUUUCK! darn near middle of nowhere.
Hid the bike in the woods...and yep you guessed it.......sigh...two up on my DR350.... We rode like that and slabed it into Grayling for 23miles. My inmate passenger bouncing around and waving at everyone. The poor DR I was pushing 70mph with both of us on board...It a good thing bikes don't have feelings. Anyhow dropped my passenger off at a bar, and Ran the super slab suck fest another 45miles back to base camp for a truck.
5pm I leave camp with the truck. 45min later I pick up my buddy and we head for the recovery mission.
Great hiding spot...

7:00pm Loaded...and we would be also.

My rear knobbie was not the greatest, but after all the slabbing...yikes

All in all still a great weekend. nobody at Suzuki every dreamed of the stuff we put these bikes through. I was also impressed with my 350 it went anywhere I pointed it and only struggled to hang with it's big brother 650 North of 70mph. But Like I said I'm hoping a gearing change will help that some.

Can't wait to do it again.

Nice riding area

Good report. I love trails like that.

Where did you get those yellow frame protectors?

Also, I wouldn't change the gearing. My bike seems to love being above 6000 rpm.

According to the notes in the owners manual that came with the bike the frame protectors are from Maier.

as for not changing the gearing....Really???? I mean I ran 7000rpm for almost an hour straight.....the bike was screaming.....I kept waiting for something bad to happen. Or does everyone just ring the crap out of these bikes? Normal?

Looks like he picked up a rock, and that jammed things up nicely.

Where are you guys at?

Michcon!!

No plating the WR.......you need to be way over weight and way under powered for these rides........

Grind it back until there is no bevel left, just flat.

Nice area to ride!

Camp location is on a need to know basis.....sorry.

Misko, I agree with Gino. The WR is way too good a bike to ride with us. Pogo stick suspension and about 15hp less than you need...is a must.
