I awoke to the sound of rain on my tent Thursday morning. A quick check of the radar showed it would be clearing out soon but not soon enough to keep from packing up a dripping wet tent. There was also a bigger blob to the east that I'd be heading straight for....I decided to take the 44 past the south side of the Badlands through the reservation and all the way out to the 83 before turning to the north, it worked.

Bad land.

Interstate speeds and no big trucks or much of anything else, for that matter.

The Dakotas are pretty much laid out on a grid with all roads going N-S or E-W...I was needing to go NE so that meant a lot of zig-zagging...

....but when you see a storm to the east, just go north until your clear of it.

People drive strange things out on the plains.

Is it OK to have the rule of thirds upside down?

It was out here in the middle of South Dakota that my SPOT tracker quit posting updates to the web. Turns out it was a problem with SPOT's own servers and everyone's SPOT quit posting updates to the web around 4:30 Thu afternoon. It made my Mom worry, I feel bad that something that was supposed to keep her from being worried caused more worry. Anyway....the SDSP ended up looking for me...but I was already in MN.

I stayed with a cousin Thu night and set out on the final 200 miles to my parent's place Fri AM in cool drizzly conditions.

Real horsepower!

The high temp of the day....July 26th!

It was good to see family! ..even if my visit was a short one this time, I had hoped to leave the bike there and fly back home and work for a couple of weeks but that didn't work out so I'd need to do a quick oil change between showers and hit the road first thing Sat.

I won't post all the family pics I took but here's a few Mom took that are ride related.

Arriving safe, damp and in time for a big roast beef lunch on Friday.

Some new dino....

Bundled back up for 46f and drizzle Sat AM.

Maybe it was only 45 degrees...with water dripping off the roof.

It was nasty for the first 120 miles....then as I rode away from Lk Superior on US53 in WI things dried out but remained cool and cloudy. The tall ships were in the Duluth harbor and I'd have liked to have taken a few pics but my desire to get out of the cold rain won out on that one!

These next 3 pics are the only thing I know about Wisconsin.

Traffic came to a stop on the interstate (forget where) but I was near an exit so I made my own detour.

My destination for the day was Pansy and Feo's in IL.....the final leg on two lane.

They grilled up some great sausage and we walked the dogs out for some ice cream and I took only a few more pics but none of them turned out.

Lots of puupies!

They were great hosts! and I hope to be back up there again in a couple of weeks for the TT races!

Big day to get home on Sunday and my shortest route takes me right past the Indianapolis Motor Speedway that was hosting a NASCAR race that day. Detour time! 112 miles of two lane to avoid that mess may or may not have slowed me down a little....

Crazy crop dusters.

First glimpse of the Smokies....always makes me feel like I'm back home even though there's another 150 miles to the house.

That's pretty much it....hope to be back on the road not this weekend but the next.

Did I already post this?

Just 4,600 and some miles or so......

If I look at that dog's face too long, I start to get a little choked up...
