SAR and SPOT discussion: was "Rider Help Needed -west of Albuquerque"

One of the guys on Two Wheeled Texans (and maybe here), hit is Spot help and 911 button today on the Continential Divide Trail west of Albuquerque.

Here's the test of the message that got things started on TWT:
got a message from Beemerbobs spot out here:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...45,2.39502&z=9

the Sheriff went out to look once and is going out again; his brother and wife have the message and are concerned and wondered if any TWT members are close by and can help, he is out of cell phone range

Latitude:35.55553

Message:Need non-emerg help! Verify they (SPOt) are sending help-if not find help

Here is his ride report thread:

And here is the link to his blog with links to tracking: http://beemerbob.com/

Any chance there are some New Mexico inmates with time and resources to get out and check on Bob? He's a good guy and a pretty good rider.

Spot

Has the sheriff asked for assistance? Any central phone number being used for coordination? I'm over 100 miles away in Albuq and most likely it is muddy out there and I know it is dark--I've ridden the roads around the CDT track in that area a lot. From the Google map it looks like he may be off the CDT track but I will have to look at those coordinates on my CDT trace to be sure.

That can be a muddy area out there north of San Mateo if the data on his unit is correct. Pretty remote area too.

Coords

I'm not real good with Lat\Long coords but it looks like he is northwest of the CDT track maybe closer to the 196\509 hardsurface bypass--or as best I recall the hard surface bypass for that area of the CDT? Maybe one of you LatLong experts can clarify.
With no follow-up from the OP or a phone number I will check back in the AM to see if any information has been received from the sheriff or the family.

From his SPOT unit, two requests about 2hr15min apart.

Help

OK since the OP has not posted any followup can we assume that help is no longer needed?

Sorry, I went to bed. I haven't seen any updates on the TWT thread yet. I think Bob's brother is still waiting on word from the Sheriff, but it has been too quiet. Hopefully he is only broke down/stuck.

I'll try and keep things updated between here and the other site.

BTW, his blog shows that he hit the help (not 911) button again this morning. So he's still stuck and not rescued. His blog won't show if he hit the 911 button though.

I am trying to get an location. But I am not having much luck.
If anyone wants to head out that way I would mind going. I can bring my truck and trailer. That way we could haul a couple of dirt bikes which might be a faster way to cover ground out there.

I don't mind helping out a fellow rider but then again I don't want to drive 150 miles and be wandering around in a remote--and it is--muddy area in the dark when the sheriff has already helped the guy out. As best I can tell from the 866 number on the post he has some kind of Spot roadside assistance?
Also the lat\long appears to be well off the CDT track in an area that I have not ridden. If the family still needs help post it here with a contact number and I'm sure someone will help as best they can.

Hair,
If you don't have the .gpx track for the CDT it can be found here--Thanks Bigdog--I've ridden this thing maybe 15 times here in NM and know the track well.
http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108842

From the lat\log given it does not even come close to the CDT track and looks to be north and west of the track by a good bit. But then again I'm not good with lat\log.
With the rains the roads from Cabezon out that way are going to be a mess most likely and I don't want to get stuck if the sheriff is already handling the help request.

I am willing to head out there. But I need help getting the cordances into a format that both my Map Source Topo and I understand. I want to know exactly where I am headed so I don't get lost too.

Here is what a way cordance in my Map Souce looks like. N47 10.641 W113 28.971
When I try to convert
Latitude:35.55551
Longitude:-107.50139

In to something that looks like mine. I get this
N35.55551 W107.50139
My Map Souce goes to the general location. But it doesn't mark the spot. What am I doing wrong?

I've passed on info to JBay on the TWT site. He has contact with Bob's brother. And I agree about not racing out there right away. Let's see what the family has heard from the official response folks and see how we can help. I'm hoping worst case is that he only needs a bike extraction, but lack of communication really makes coordinating anything tough.

I really appreciate you all responding with info and offers.
