Rage Against The Mundane

I live in Key West.

Sure, it's beautiful here but not a very good place for riding motorcycles.

I have two friends who also ride.

Greg had an 1150GS until very recently. He sold it and bought a nice 2002 KTM 640 Adventure.

Steve has a Buell Ulysses, a Honda XR600R that he keeps at a friend's house in CO, and a newly purchased XR650L for here in FL.

Last weekend we decided to get off the rock and check out some riding on the mainland, near Orlando.

Greg had plans he couldn't get out of on such short notice so Steve and I put the bikes on the trailer (yeah, the trailer) and headed out before dawn for the 9 hour trip.

Steve really adheres to the whole ATGATT thing.

Our destination was a wildlife management area that looked promising on Google Earth and a few posts in the Regional section.

We weren't disappointed. It is the rainy season in Florida, and some of the area was nearly impassable. Some was totally impassable.
I walked this one and it was nearly waist-deep.

We only had to turn around a few times, though it was sometimes a challenge to make our way through or around some of the deep holes.

We had a blast and didn't come close to riding all of the area in two days.

The riding ranged from wide, hard packed "main roads" to narrow two track through the woods.

Some pics in random order. These are all iphone pics, but we have some good GoPro HD video I will post as well once I edit it down to something watchable.

The only thing worse than one bike stuck in the mud is both bikes stuck in the mud.

Moar.

I will add the video and in the future I will post more of the adventures of the three misplaced dual-sport riders as we try to find something to ride.
This is not an easy task on our chain of tiny islands stretching 120 miles in to the Caribbean.
Stay tuned for more as we.......

Nuh-uh. See my bike safely on the other side, looking on with concern as we free his buddy?

As promised here's some video.

I haven't had a chance to edit, so this is just raw, unedited stuff.

Just to give you an idea what it is like up there.

This first one is just a simple water crossing. This is on our way back out after having to turn around a few miles down the trail.

It looks best if you set it to 720p

Here's a longer one. Steve got creative and put the GoPro on his leg.
It makes for a cool angle, but he almost submarined it towards the end of the clip.

There's a little wheelie at 2:30 if you're in to that sort of thing.

Again, set it to 720p for HD.

The latest event for the Southernmost Thumpers was a day trip north.

Steve is out of town and Greg wanted to have his 640 Adventure looked at so we rode up to the closest KTM dealer, 4 hours away.
I took the F800GS because it was feeling neglected and this was mostly a street ride.
We were like kids in a candy store, as we have nothing like a real motorsports superstore in the Keys. Palmetto Motorsports. Cool place, nice people.

I drooled over the Husabergs for a while and we shopped for riding gear, etc.

After a stop for lunch we rode to the Card Sound area, south of Homestead Motor Speedway (I think that's what it's called). There is a good amount of old, deteriorated limestone main roads as well as lots of smaller dirt crossroads.

As is normal this time of year, we were treated to monsoon rains that filled all the holes and made it more of an adventure.

Greg took some video with his new Penny Tech micro video cam once the rain stopped. He is going to edit tonight and I will add it here.
For now, here is a couple of iphone pics.

Thanks for checking in. Steve gets back today and we hope to get a ride in with all three of us real soon.
Stay tuned!

John and Steve are working today so Greg is out exploring on his own.

He sent me these shots, and hopefully will send more later.

I'm working today but some of the other Southernmost Thumpers (and a big GS) are out riding.

Greg sent me this picture a few minutes ago.

Brent is on his 640 Adv, Theo riding his new to him GS that he bought from Greg, Greg on his 640 Adv, and Steve on his XR650

He said he will send some action shots later.
