Geezer,

Checking out your report on the ferry from Port aux Basque. Great job. Marc and I holded up in Deer lake for the "hurricane". Did a couple extra loops around Red Indian Lake and Port au Port Peninsula so we are behind all you guys now. Dock in 1/2 hour. Hope to meet you in the marbles again !

You guys missed out, if you're in Port Aux Basque on a saturdaynight, go to the legion, all the other bars shut down around 22:00 hours, and everybody will all head there, including bar-owners, its the most hospital saturdaynight you've ever experienced, good excuse to come back eh..

Day 12 Charlottetown to Woodstock New Brunswick



The concern of the morning was where was the rain. Old People MTV, aka The Weather Channel, was predicting rain and the radar showed a line of thunderstorms moving our way. Jack opted for putting on his rain gear but I thought it was too warm to start out that way and that I could put it on later if necessary. I told Jack it would just make him mad and he allowed that it wouldn’t be the first time, nor the last, that I would do that. Naturally, 10 miles down the road, we had to stop while I got the suit on.

The first stop of the day was Cavendish PEI, the site of the building that inspired “Anne of Green Gables”.
The park was not yet open but the park warden let us take some pictures.

Now we need to get breakfast. We ended up here. High on our recommended list.

Lobster Benedict and the best potatoes of the trip

Leaving PEI we used the Confederation Bridge - the longest bridge in Canada. The Bridge is 13km long and takes 13 minutes from the toll booth to the other side.



Here’s the deal. Getting onto PEI is free. You have to pay to leave. It’s about 38 dollars on the ferry and 17 dollars on the bridge.



Then it was off to Moncton and the BMW dealer - Jack needed a bulb for his headlight and I didn’t pack a 24mm wrench for tightening my chain.. Thankfully I had no tire problems on the ride.. A shout out to Shawn and the crew at Atlantic Motoplex for their assistance and interest in our trip and getting us back on the road.

One failure of my planning was underestimating the distances in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. That gives us an excuse to come back.

We wanted to be in Maine tomorrow so we had to hurry today. We rode the slab across NB to get to Hartland to see the world’s longest covered bridge.





I really wanted to ride down the pedestrian walkway.



We liked the ride so much we did it twice.


Miscellaneous stuff
Broken stuff
Jack lost his custom ear plugs and is using store bought foam.
The temple on my riding glasses broke off and I am wearing my progressive lenses - that’s bifocals to the uninitiated.
My GPS (Zumo 550) touch screen has gone nuts. Anyone know how to reset it?

What’s going on in my headset
We are using SENA SMH10s which are quite an improvement over the Blueant Interphones we used to use. Longer battery life and the ability to use and charge simultaneously.
So we are riding along and Jack says “I’m going to slow down because the brush on the side of the road is not cut back far enough and I want to be able to spot moose on the side of the road.”
Me “okay”
5 minutes later
Me “ there are two moose in the road
Jack “What?”
Me “Moose in the Road”
Jack “What?”
Me “two moose just crossed the road”
Jack “didn’t see them”

And later
“How come there are many signs saying “lots for sale” and none saying “not much for sale”?
See what I have to put up with.

We are now in Woodstock NB and will cross into Maine in the AM heading for Mt Washington.

Had our traditional toast.

Every time the touch screen on my streetpilot 2720 would go nuts, it was just really dirty. Try cleaning it with glass cleaner at best, or at worst a wet paper towel. If it gets coated in dust/grime it'll get false inputs from it.

Day 13 Woodstock NB to Manchester NH

Woodstock is about 8 miles form the US border at I-95. When we went to bed it seeemed that today would be an easy riding day. The weather gods laughed at us for our impudence. When we got up it was pouring. No debates about rain gear. The camera is in a zip-loc bag in the bottom of the tank bag. The problem was that at 0600 it was still dark. I’ll ride in the rain and I’ll ride in the dark but I have to have a very good reason to ride in the rain in the dark and touring is not one of those reasons. So we sat around till almost 0700 before side stands up. It was an easy run to the border and an uneventful return to the USA. Our immediate goal was Mt Washington in New Hampshire. Since it was raining there was no reason to do anything but ride the super-slab. So it was 150+ miles of interstate and an exit on to Rte 2 to go west across Maine. The rain clouds went away and I ditched the rain gear. Jack, seeing the glass half empty, left his on. He was unhappy when the temperature got up to 75.

Seeing a sign for a covered bridge we decided to detour and see it. Dug out the camera and got this



Then its back down the road. Who could resist truth in advertising?



Finally we get to Mt Washington. The road to the top is closed today and tomorrow for vehicle testing - whatever that means.



The top is up there somewhere with a temp of 44 and wind chill of 32.

After lunch we just got on the road and rode to Manchester for the night.

Nice meeting the two of you today. The "testing" was Travis Pastrana trying to break some record I heard. Could be wrong though. We peeled off right behind y'all a bit after the last one lane construction stop and hit that Hurricane Mountain Rd,, pretty cool. We were at the visiter's center when y'all rode by. In a cottage in Bethehem now,,, hoping to hike up Mt Washington tomorrow and maybe run the bikes up the road Friday since it was closed today.

On the Testing:
Extreme sports competitor Travis Pastrana became the fastest person to reach the summit of Mt. Washington on Wednesday, racing up the auto road in just 6 minutes, 20.47 seconds. Pastrana averaged 72 miles per hour on the 7.6-mile road in a special Subaru Impreza rally car.
The Mt. Washington auto road climbs 4,618 feet with an average gradient of 11.6 percent.
Remarkably, it was Pastrana's first high-speed attempt to reach the summit. The previous record of six minutes and 42 seconds was set in 1998 by Frank Sprongl (below).

Pastrana's feat was part of a test session in advance of next year's return of the "Climb to the Clouds," the auto race which will be making a return to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the auto road, following a 10-year absence.
"It's amazing that he was able to drive that car to the summit in 6:20, and all the more so when you realize that he and his co-driver had just seen the auto road for the first time the day before," auto road GM Howie Wemyss said in a statement. "Our racing heritage here at the Auto Road runs deep, having started in 1904 and now Travis is part of that heritage as the fastest person to the summit by automobile."

Anti-climatic Finish

We got up Thursday morning with all the best intentions - had lots of places to ride while allowing Jack to collect states on the East Coast that he had never ridden in before. We missed a turn outside Boston and ended up in the rush hour traffic and a ride through the "big dig". then it was down I-95 and into Rhode Island. After eating breakfast the unspoken thoughts were voiced - we both realized we needed a "real" rest day. So it was decided that we would put Annapolis in the GPS (Jack's as mine is dead). We continued down 95, used the Tappan Zee Bridge to by-pass New York City, and down the Garden State Parkway. We diverted onto Rte 1 to go to Fairless Hills PA so Jack could see the house of my childhood. He hadn't been there in over 40 years so it was a nice interlude. Then back onto 95, over Delaware 1 and then 896. here i was wondering why my shifter was so slippery and looked down to see my boot and leg covered in oil. Stopped for a trouble shooting session. Apparently I cross threaded the dip stick the last time I checked the oil. I got it sealed sufficiently to finish the final 80 miles home. the bike is now at Bob's BMW while they check it out.

Jack will be at Bob's tomorrow getting new tires to replace the Karoos for his ride back to Colorado

So we covered 4000+ miles in 14 days. It was a great ride and I would recommend it to anyone. Just watch out for the 30 miles between Mary's Harbor and Red Bay

Marty, I can't tell you how much I enjoyed following along on your trip. I don't guess you know anywhere locally I can get some Lobster Benedict do you? Out of all the breathtaking pictures you posted, that was one of my favorites.

Any thoughts about the differences between the 800s and the thumper 650s?
