The more time I spend here, the more I like it. Thanks to the folks who put together this nonrally. The barbeque was delicious, the riding was much fun, and the company was superb.

Before I could take off for Hot Springs, I attended my baby's debut as a fashion model. What fun it was, and she looks great.

Things came together around 9:30.

We blasted up 209 to Trust, a quality stretch.

_anatic led us up an unassuming farm road. Here Robble is sizing up the obstacles.

Back up to the Mayapple Ridge. It was pretty wet, and getting up there was more difficult than last time.

I heart fire towers. This one is cool because it doesn't really have public access, so you get to see how nice these places can be. Windows, furniture, stove, etc.

Wait, there's more.

We then headed over to Hurricane Creek. The water was high last time we were over there. On the kayak message board, there was a report of some good boaters leaving boats behind on Big Creek because the water got really high on them the day before. I was pretty sure we were going to see big water. We did. Two fellows crossed the final big creek crossing. I should say almost crossed they both had to push out the other side. Props to them for going for it. I would need stronger motivation to do that. They decided to come back instead of riding around Cold Springs. After a half hour of engineering, they dropped the water level about eight inches.

It's still pretty deep.

Basically, we headed straight back to camp. A few guys peeled off. I contemplated going for a kayak ride, but I ended up sleeping several hours, barely making it to dinner on time. That would have been a bummer because Kenny's barbeque was top notch. Killer slaw, too.

The next day, people seemed pretty intent on packing up and leaving. I had never been to Rich Mtn, so I headed off in that direction. I rode up through Paint Creek, checking out the falls. I got on 422, which is a really nice place to ride a trail bike. It is a shame that the best dual sporting in NC is actually in Tennessee.

\

I saw a humungous barred owl.

I got back to camp around 2 and talked with KTMike for a bit. No stopping in Asheville today. Spring break and five weekends in a month. I'm broke.

I had thought about that, but I never made it out of my chair after we got back.

First trip to Brown Mtn this year.

I already love this T 63.

I haven't seen this guy in maybe five years. It was good to hang out again. Sorry I snapped the picture too early.

The Catawba rhododendron are on right now.

I met Lucky this morning for a trip over to Wilkes County.

First we had to ride some annoying roads in Caldwell County to get over there.

That's truck driving. NC 268 was Sunday driver hell on Earth today.

The only thing worse than an SUV that won't let you pass is someone coming at you in your lane. Be careful out there.

Learning to drive in this area could lead to a successful career in motoring.

Brand new pavement. Hopefully they will sweep it.

I'm sort of new to the Rendezvous business, but it didn't take long to become a priority of mine. After sweating out some substitute business, I played hooky out of school Wednesday afternoon.

This is no box turtle.

$.28 per gallon.

I arrived at Freeborne's around 4. Robble and I headed out for a local recon mission and to stay out of trouble. I performed my patented and trade marked feet sticking out of tent performance.

The next morning, we gathered for 9:30. I was nervous leading a ride. Would the participants approve of the route? Would everyone stay upright? It worked out pretty well.

We worked our way over to Lenoir and hit up Maple Sally Road. Conditions were nearly spot on. Not too wet, not too dry.

We went to Hannah's BBQ for lunch. I had to be back in Morganton for the Literacy Council's spelling bee, so I only rode those guys over to 421. They can find their way from there. This is Adventure Rider, right?

What fun! The spelling bee was fun, except that Patton beat Freedom. More to come later. I gotta go get propane and groceries.

Friday morning, I headed back to Laurel Springs. We didn't get any rain at the house, but they sure must have gotten it up on Grandfather Mountain. John's River and Wilson Creek were huge. I learned later that they got some rain up in Laurel Springs as well. I picked a good night to stay at home.

I got rained on some on the way.

advtenn's ride had left by the time I got there. Maybe I'll catch up to them in Damascus.

I was turning down interesting looking roads and consulting the map, and before too long, I crested this hill and there they were.

Soon the ride was moving again, and the weather was improving.

Sure, it's 60 miles to Iron Mountain, but it's tough to beat. We're just a wee bit short of perpendicular here.

Eventually, we made it to Skull's Gap. Several people opted for a less spicy run into Damascus.

advtenn made this line work! This was the first of three slick, steep climbs. They were much easier the next day when they had dried out.

I miss Clifford.

Two dudes (sorry about the screen names!) on KLRs got through here.

You gonna do the second half?

He's still smiling.

Kyle B knows how to get his.

So we got to Damascus, where Trail Days was on, and fueled up. I was kind of dehydrated, so I got a drink. Suddenly, the group is helmeted up and leaving. I only caught up when everyone stopped. These guys were in a hurry to get home, and I can only run 50 mph, so I peeled off.

Silas Creek is a really neat road.

In Ashe County, even the buildings lean into the turns.

Thank you, sir, may I have another?

Set em down right over there.

Back at camp safe.

Some people are dedicated to the lifestyle.

Friday evening I was talked into going over to Iron Mountain again. Oh twist my arm.

I was late for my appointed meeting time in Damascus (What else is new?). My partner had trucked over there because she didn't have a tag on her bike.

Much drier than yesterday, and that 250 KTM is a much better appliance than a KLR. We made good time.

An out and back run on Iron Mountain would have made for a short day, so we poached a run up to Whitetop Mountain to take in the view.

I cruised back to camp for the fine victuals. I didn't last long at the party.

Sunday morning

The kitty was happy to get out when I got home, and the conditions were perfect for drying out my thoroughly soaked stuff. What a great time!

PS: Layla took second in her boat race at the Cheoah.

Excellent write-ups, buddy. Making me miss that area.

When are you coming out here for a visit? I have a spare bike now....

A quick trip to Bristol. I got to Mountain City by 8:45, figuring I would be ahead of the crowd. I was, but I came up behind a Johnson County Sherriff patrol. Yikes! He immediately pulled into the gravel pulloff, where I envisioned the ticket writing would take place. He did a gravel spraying U turn back onto 421 and sped off back toward town. Phew!

I "got lost" on the way into Bristol. Those damned VA three digit roads. Whatever you do, don't go over Spoon Gap if you're in the area.

I spent a good part of the day at Kyle B's house. I hope I didn't keep him from essential chores. He rode back to Shady Valley with me. We had a relatively clear run back.

We had an iced tea and rocked on the porch a spell.

Look what the cat dragged home.

The cam chain tensioner doesn't appear to be any worse for the wear. Fingers crossed.
