Depressed by the blooming daffodils and migrating birds, Lucky and I hit the road this morning. Temperatures were forecast to be in the low sixties, so we headed to Ashe County to keep in touch with that wintry feeling. Since it was so cold there, I didn't take any pictures. We went over Georges Gap and Beaverdam to 421, 67, 88. West Peak to Peak to Three Top. Unbelievably, we had a car free run of 194 all the way to the light in Boone. We also had a car free run of 194 from Banner Elk all the way into Valle Crucis.
We crushed gyros at Mr. Originals and headed to Aho and Sampson, which was in nice shape. ![]() Down this low at 2 P.M., it was a nice warm day. We toured Buffalo Cove and the Patterson metro area. ![]() ![]() ![]() Closer to the house. ![]() ![]() Lots of bikes out there today. Thanks to Lucky for the call.

Not far at all. There was a NOTICE attached to a tree next to the creek. This led to turning around on the other side of the creek. It got the salt off though.

Some new friends around the house.
![]() Once again, we had nice warm weather down here in the Piedmont, but I found myself up at the Blue Ridge, but not after a nice base of the escarpment run over to Parsonsville. Burke County ![]() Just like yesterday and Thursday, the P.M. clouded up and got chilly. 221 is covered with crud. ![]() ![]() She never stood a chance. ![]()

Apparently, the colony that they put in the box included a queen. She's in there and already laying. Layla was really bummed when she found the queen in the photo above. When they ate their way through the candy door they went Colonel Qadafi on her. Layla went back and looked and found brood and the queen.

2 hives, both fresh colonies. The two that were here last year didn't make it over the winter. They still had plenty of food. Winter was mild. The one was quite strong in November. ???? We'll see what happens this year. So far it has been dicey with cold weather and dead queens.

There was a ton of dead bees in there. she has found them empty in the past. Two winters ago a hive starved. Plenty of bees but not a speck of honey.

Ahhh Spring vacation. It was a tad chilly when I rolled out this morning. The good news was that I had Hickory Nut Gap and NC 194 from Banner Elk to Valle Crucis all to myself. That never happens.
I met Kyle B at the state line. Neither one of us was in much of hurry to get going as the sun was doing its job. ![]() We went over Brushy Fork and down the North Fork of the New and then back over Big Laurel into Mountain City and then on up into Damascus. ![]() We then went over Hurricane Road to check out Barton Gap. We agreed that DRZ research needed to be done first. My memory had proven to be faulty once already today. I didn't know if I could get across Hurricane Creek with my feet dry. Kyle's dried coconuts are like eating donuts. ![]() It may have been a good thing that we didn't do Barton Gap because the gate was closed due to a slide. There was no getting around the gate on this end. Time for a wheel wash. ![]() We took VA 16 over to Fox Creek and down through Konnarock and on into Damascus. ![]() Backbone Rock down into Shady Valley was tempting but I had to get back for dinner. We went down 91 to Mountain City and parted ways. Can't wait to do it again. I gassed up in Mountain City and went to Old 421 to 321 to Kellersville. I wanted to see if Andy Hicks was as good as I remember it. Yep ![]() Nice views ![]() Lee Gualtney snowdrift. It will probably get bigger before it gets smaller. ![]() Coolest piece of artwork ever. ![]() I had Hickory Nut Gap all to myself AGAIN. From Newland, I went to Linville and slabbed 181 back to Morganton.
