Is this the stock skidplate? (bashplate)

Photo 41
I'm looking at crashbars to add to the DR, but DrCoopster pointed out a bashplate that fellow advriders recommend which doubles as crashbars (apparently well too)....
So - is this the stocker, and should I upgrade the skidplate to the sweet one, or should I go with the crashbars?

That is the Sweet one

I have a '91 with that same bash plate. In my opinion, that is the sweet one although you might be able to find one lighter.

Polish it up and leave it alone.

Gas Cap Question

For all you guys with the older, better DRs, Does any one have an aftermarket Gas Cap ?

The cap on my '91 cracked and I need a new one for the stock tank.

Are there any later model Suzuki caps that will fit the '91 ?

I'd love to have one of those Billet fancy caps from BBR.......

Do you know if it doubles as protection bars, or should I get them too?

My '95 has a keyed gas cap, I think I saw somewhere else that yours is threaded, so, I can't really help you there.

I've got an acerbis tank though - and it's pretty awesome.

What kind of protection bars do you want? I'm not sure I understand...

If I biff, (street or dirt) I'd like something that'll protect the engine, minimally. I've seen the ebay rack that protects the rear taillights, that's on my long-term buy list.

That looks like the stock skidplate, but can't be sure. The pre-96 bikes did come with skidplates, but they don't really take the place of crash bars.

Hey Toolfan, or anyone else. I need a keyed gas cap for my 94 anyone have one they want to part with?

If so, PM me.

I've been looking for months and can't really find one except for one on eBay, but the seller didn't responded to numerous email requests for a simple question.

Thats not a standard skid plate.
The standard one is only about 2 mm thick, its like tin foil, but it does the job.

but any was I,m just here to let you know that a KLX 250 front end goes straight into the earlier DR's.

I just had to cut the turn stop and the steering lock off.

But apart from that The bearings are the same and the shaft is the same length.

Springs are to soft (as you would expect) and the handle bars aren't rubber mounted (I noticed the vibrations on the highway).

The breaks are better though.

I have only just done it over the weekend so I haven't really tested it yet.

Standard Bash Plate

Thetrev, This is exactly the stock bash plate as found on my '91 and 92 DR650s. I've beet the crap out of both bikes and never been able to damage the plate or anything it protects.
It is an aluminum heavy stamping at least 3/16 thick. If it didn't have the holes in it , it'd weigh 5 lbs.

ahh yes I believe I made a mistake.

I forgot that the bash plates could be (and looks like are) different on the Dakar and the RS.

The DR650rs's bash plate is made of aluminum foil, that one looks better than most of the after market ones I have seen.
